CALCULATION OF CUMULATIVE GRADE POINT KOFORIDUA POLYTECHNIC AVERAGE (CGPA) BY Sefakor Awurama Adabunu Examinations Officer, Computer Science Department DATE: 27 th October 2017
Why Do We Compute CGPA? • The CGPA stand for Cumulative Grade Point Average, measured in numerical terms. • It determines the class of award at the end of the three year program in the polytechnic. (Article 6. 4 NABPTEX) • It is used to determine your progression in the program being offered from year to year. (Article 7. 0 NABPTEX) • Its computation begins as soon as academic work begins. (Article 11 -KDUA Poly Students Handbook)
• Two variables are used in computing the Grade Point VARIABLES IN GPA Average (GPA). They are. USED the Grade Point & (GP) and the Credit Hour (CR). CGPA • The GPA is used to determine the class of award to student in a semester and Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) is used to determine the class of award to student for two or more semesters. • Credit Hour (CR) of any registered course may be 2, 3, or 4, and it is dependent on whether the course is core, elective or project work.
• PLEASE REFER TO THE SAMPLE ASSESSMENT SHEET THE SCORING PROCESS ATTACHED • The pre-assigned letter grade to marks • • • MARK 85 -100 80 -84 75 -79 70 -74 65 -69 60 -64 55 -59 50 -54 BELOW 50 LETTER GRADE A+ A B+ B C+ C D+ D F
• • • A+ A B+ B C+ C D+ D F The pre-assigned weights of the = letter 5 grades are= 4. 5 =4 = 3. 5 = 3 = 2. 5 = 2 = 1. 5 =0
Computation of GP’S and GPA’S • The GP is calculated by multiplying the pre-assigned weights of the letter grades made in a semester in the various registered courses by their respective credit hours in the semester in question. • The GPA is computed as: • the CGPA = CGP/CCR GPA = GP/CR, and • PLEASE REFER TO THE TRANSCRIPT
EXAMPLE with respect to the transcript • Suppose the student in the subsequent semester (Semester Two) made a GP of 66 and had a Credit Hour (CR) of 24, then his CGPA = (54+66)/(21+24) = 2. 67 (Second Class Lower). • The CGPA for subsequent semesters can be computed in similar fashion • The final class of a student at the end of his/her study is determined by adding all the GPAs (i. e. from semester 1 – 6) and divide it by all the Credit Hours (i. e. from semester 1 -6).
The various classes of award are: • First class (GPA/CGPA of 4. 00 and above) • Second Class Upper (GPA/CGPA of 3. 00 – 3. 99) • Second Class Lower (GPA/CGPA of 2. 00 – 2. 99) • Pass (GPA/CGPA of 1. 50 – 1. 99) • Fail (GPA/CGPA of below 1. 50)
