Cable Routing Wall Plates Wall Fishing 1 Introduction
Cable Routing Wall Plates Wall Fishing 1
Introduction This section instructs you on how to route cable, install wall boxes and wall plates, and conceal cable by performing basic wall fishing techniques. 2
Objectives Once you have completed this module, you should be able to: ü Properly and discretely route cable from the LNB to the IRD ü Install a wall box and wall plate on the inside of the home ü Properly perform basic wall fishing 3
Cable Routing 4
Session Topics Cable Routing • Pre-Installation walk through • Discretely route cable from the LNB to the receiver • Attach routed cable to the structure using approved attachment devices • Insert drip loops and service loops where needed • Determine and execute a safe point of entry • Properly weather seal point of entry 5
Tools and Parts Suggested Tools and Parts Tools Parts • Drill • Approved RG-6 cable • Drill bits • Approved F-connectors • Compression connector • Ground blocks • Hammer • • Stud-finder Screw clips, nail clips, vinyl siding clips • Tape measure • Wire ties • Cable prep tool • Silicone sealer • Compression tool • Wall penetration bushings 6

Pre-installation • Plan the cable route – Interior and exterior • Review with the customer 8
Routing Guidelines • Be discrete with your cable route • Avoid eyesores and Hazards 9
Routing Guidelines What is right or wrong with this picture? 10
Cable Routing Guidelines • Follow the lines of the structure and route the cable at right angles 11
Cable Routing Guidelines • Did the tech follow the lines of the structure and route the cable at right angles? Remember to always keep the ODU at least 10’ from all utility lines. This is a poor and unsafe ODU location!!! 12
Cable Routing Guidelines • Is the cable route discrete? • Will the cable become damaged? • Is it a safety hazard for the customer? 13
Cable Routing Cable Attachment • Variety • Depends on the surface • Nail and screw clips are the most common 14
Cable Routing Other Cable Attachments • Vinyl Siding Clips 15
Cable Routing Attachment Guidelines • Clip placement – 18” - 24” apart on horizontal runs – 36” apart on vertical runs • NEC (always follow local codes!) – Cannot zip-tie to home’s external electrical conduit housing – Cannot be run parallel within 2” of internal electrical – Techs should not be within 10 feet of an aerial power line (house aerial drop) • Never attach cable to the roof of the structure 16
Cable Clip Placement Cable clips placed at even spaces can cause “harmonic distortion” 17
Cable Routing Guidelines • Drip Loops 18
Cable Routing Guidelines • Service Loops 19
Quick Review What do you remember? • Where do you route cable? • How do you attach cable? • What are drip and service loops? 20
Cable Routing Point of Entry • Location where the cable enters the customer’s home 21
Cable Routing Point of Entry: Exterior Wall Entry • Inspect interior and exterior • Same height as existing wall plates • Ensure there are no hidden obstacles – Electrical – Plumbing – Ventilation 22
Inside the Wall 23
Inside the Wall 24
Inside the Wall 25
Cable Routing Point of Entry: Exterior Wall Entry • Mark a location on the wall that is free of obstacles • Drill from the inside to the outside • Drill through the drywall and stop drilling • Move bit from side to double-check for obstacles “Measure Twice Drill Once” from a fixed reference point in order to verify location of the hole. 26
Cable Routing Point of Entry: Drilling through Carpet • Determine location • Cut 1” x 1” “X” • Fold back tabs • Insert ¾” conduit • Drill through floor • Pull cable through conduit • Remove conduit • Fold carpet tabs down 27

Wall Boxes and Plates 40
Session Topics Wall Boxes and Plates: • Determine best height and location for the wall box and plate • Install a wall box and wall plate 41
Tools and Parts Suggested Tools and Parts Tools • • Drill and drill bits Drywall saw Stud-finder Tape measure Level Screw driver Hammer Pencil Parts • • Wall box Wall plate with approved F-81 barrels 42
Wall Boxes and Plates Wall Boxes • Standard outlet box • Dry wall box • Mud ring (Not used after construction of the home is completed) 43
Wall Boxes and Plates Wall Plates • Single RG-6 Cable • Dual RG-6 Cable • Single Cable with Phone Jack • Dual Cable with Phone Jack All F-81 barrels must be rated to 2250 MHz • Phone Jack 44
Wall Boxes and Plates Determine Location • Height of the wall plate • 3 inches from a stud 45
Wall Boxes and Plates Wall Box Installation • Mark the location – Be sure to identify wall material, and potential hidden hazards such as electrical wires and piping • Use wall box as template • Use a level • Lightly trace the template • Drill a hole in each corner • Cut out the hole using drywall saw 46
Wall Boxes and Plates Wall Box Installation • Knock out a tab to route the cable through • Pull cable through slot • Slide wall box into hole • Use screw driver to tighten against drywall 47
Wall Boxes and Plates Wall Box Installation • Attach cable and wire to back of wall plate • Torque to specification • Screw wall plate on to wall box 48
Exercise Hands-on • In groups of three • Take turns installing a wall box and plate • Complete at least three installations • When you feel confident and are ready to be evaluated, raise your hand 49
Wall Fishing 50
Session Topics • Wall fish RG-6 cable from the attic • Wall fish RG-6 cable from the basement or crawl space 51
Tools and Parts Suggested Tools and Parts Tools • • Drill bits Flex bit Stud-finder Drywall saw Tape measure Level Hammer Parts • • Cable Glow rod Fish tape Steel rod Telephone wiring toner Wall plates Wall box 52

Wall Fishing Attic Down – Inside • Check both sides of the wall • Stud-finder, check for fire breaks within wall cavity • Cut hole for the wall box • Flashlight in cutout 54
Wall Fishing Attic Down – Attic • Locate the steel rod using reference points such as pipes, electrical boxes/lines, ceiling lights, HVAC vents, etc. • Drill a ¾ or 1 ¼” hole in the top plate of the wall • Pull the cable to hole • Push glow rod and cable down hole 55
Wall Fishing Attic Down – Inside • Pull the glow rod and cable through the wall plate cutout • Install wall box and plate 56
Wall Fishing Basement / Crawl Space 1. Inspect both sides of the wall 2. Measure from corner 3. Inspect under house 57
Wall Fishing Basement / Crawl Space 4. Cut hole for wall box 5. Drill hole in base plate with a 4’ drill bit 6. Feed glow rod through hole 7. Locate glow rod attach cable 8. Pull cable through 9. Install wall box and plate 58
Wall Fishing Customer Relations • Free for Account Types – VIP • Additional Charge – All others – Inform customer before you begin work 59
Wall Fishing Customer Relations • Extensive site survey • Emergency plan • Drop cloth before entering attic • Walk only ceiling joists • Remove coverall before entering house • Check bottom of shoes • Clean up after you’ve finished • Know your limitations 60
Exercise Hands-on • In groups of three • Use glow rods, flex bits, stud-finder and fish tapes • Practice wall fishing and pulling cable • Practice finding and walking across studs inside of attic • When you feel confident and are ready to be evaluated, raise your hand 61
Summary Now that you have completed this section you should be able to: ü Properly and discretely route cable from the LNB to the IRD ü Install a wall box and wall plate on the inside of the home ü Properly perform basic wall fishing 62
