Mission Statement/Beliefs • The responsibility of C. E. Hanna is to develop students intellectually, physically, socially, and personally. • Student learning is a shared responsibility among students, teachers, parents, administration, and community.
School Offices & Hours • Main office phone number 241 -3896 • School/Cafeteria opens at 7: 00 a. m. • Students dismissed to class at 7: 22 a. m. • Instructional day begins & tardy bell rings at 7: 30 a. m.
Continued… • Bus/Car dismissal for 6 th grade at 2: 55 p. m. • Buses depart at 3: 05 p. m.
Absences: General Info. • Every student must bring a written excuse signed by his/her legal guardian within 3 days following an absence. THIS INCLUDES CHECK OUTS! Failure to present this documentation will result in the absence being marked unexcused.
Three Different Types of Absences • Excused absence- when the school system receives a documented doctor’s/legal excuse. • Undocumented excused absence- An absence in which the parent/legal guardian sends a signed note explaining the absence. A student may only have 8 undocumented excused absences per semester.
Unexcused Absence • when a written note is not received within 3 days following the absence • when the nature of the absence is not for legitimate reasons defined by law • if absence occurred for other than personal sickness, family sickness, or death in the family. • when a parent note is presented for more than 8 absences – Exceptional circumstances must be addressed by the principal/designee in a conference.
Tardiness • Teachers will require a pass from the office to admit students to class after 7: 30 a. m. • In case of a tardy, parents should accompany students inside and sign them in. STUDENTS SHOULD NOT COME IN ALONE!

ISI Reminder • When in ISI, students are counted present, but absences from class due to tardies are unexcused and could impact unfavorably on academic progress.
Make Up Work • Students with excused absences may make up work. • Teachers are not required to reteach lessons, but students will be given a reasonable opportunity to learn material missed.
Continued… • When out for an extended period, parents should make arrangements to pick up work. • If an absence is unexcused, teachers may require students to make up work on a non-credit basis.
Check Ins/Outs • Check ins/outs and tardies count against a student’s attendance record. • Always bring a written excuse for check ins/outs.
Early Check Out • Students should not be checked out early every afternoon. • Students will be called to the office for check outs rather than parents going to the room. • STUDENTS WHO CHECK OUT BEFORE 11 A. M. WILL BE COUNTED ABSENT & SHOULD BRING A WRITTEN EXCUSE.
Continued… • Students who check out must follow these procedures: – Parents/Guardians must identify people allowed to check out students. – Students may not be signed out by friends or siblings unless they are listed and approved by a parent/guardian to do so.
Continued… – STUDENTS MAY NOT SIGN OUT ON THE BASIS OF NOTES OR PHONE CALLS FROM PARENTS OR OTHERS! – The person checking out the student must be prepared to show a picture ID with number. – No check outs after 2: 40 p. m.
Attendance Recognition • IN ORDER TO ACHIEVE PERFECT ATTENDANCE, A STUDENT MUST HAVE NO CHECK INS/OUTS, TARDIES, OR ABSENCES!
Early Warning Truancy Program • Any student with 7 or more unexcused absences in a school year will be referred to the attendance officer.
Trips • Parents are discouraged from taking students on trips on regular school days. • Some exceptions will be considered but must be approved PRIOR to the requested absence.
Accidents • In case of an accident, parents will be contacted. • The local school board nor the BOE is responsible for medical bills that result from accidents occurring during the school day or at school functions.
Bus/Car Transportation Procedures • If the primary form of transportation changes, a note must be sent to the teacher with the following information: – Name – Bus number the child will be riding – Name of student with whom he/she will be getting off the bus

Continued… • Notes indicating a transportation change can be faxed by 2: 00 p. m. , but no telephone requests will be accepted!
Bus Discipline • • • No electronic devices Drivers may assign seats Be courteous No violence Remain seated Keep hands, head, and objects inside bus
Continued… • Bus riding is a privilege that can be denied-classroom behavior is expected. • Fighting will result in automatic bus suspension.
Car Transportation: Arrival • Students should arrive no earlier than 7: 00 a. m. • Parents should pull up to the mailbox in order for multiple cars to unload. • If parents need to accompany children inside, they should use the parking lot.
Car Transportation: Dismissal • Dismissal time 2: 55 -2: 57 p. m. • Cards with students’ names should be placed on the dashboard to help make loading faster.
Child Nutrition: Lunch • • • $2. 00/day 10 day lunch/breakfast ticket-$30 10 day lunch ticket-$20 Milk-$. 25/day Students may bring lunches, but they will not be allowed to heat them.
Continued… • No soft drinks • No outside lunches such as from a fast food restaurant • Menus sent home monthly • Charging lunch is not permitted • Can pay online (www. EZschoolpay. com)
Continued… • Money borrowed from office must be repaid the next day • Free & reduced lunch programs are available for those who qualify
Breakfast • • Begins August 9 th Cost $1. 00 Served 7: 00 -7: 30 Lunch manager Mrs. Blackburn
Snack • Only plain water is allowed to drink. • Nutritious snacks (popcorn, pretzels, baked chips, crackers, etc. ) • No carbonated drinks, juice, or snacks high in sugar or fat are allowed. • No snack will be heated.

Consequences • 1 mark = warning • 2 marks = silent lunch • 3 marks = parent contact/behavior contract • 4 marks = office visit
Conduct Grades • • S+ = no marks S = 1 mark N = 2 -3 marks U = 4 marks or office referral
Progression of Consequences • 1 st office referral: conference with student/parent contact • 2 nd: ISI, corporal punishment, or PE suspension • 3 rd: 0 day suspension (parent/teacher/principal conference & counselor referral)
Continued… • 4 th: 3 days ISI • 5 th: Out of school suspension • 6 or more: Out of school suspensions
Severe Clause • Results in immediate office referral • Examples: fighting, harassment, verbal threats, disrespect to school employees, or any other class II or III offenses listed in the OCS Code of Conduct

Dress Code • Applies to grades 5 -12 • Students should dress in such a manner as to not interrupt the learning process. • Areas affected include make up, hair styles, jewelry, & clothing choices.
Rules Pertaining to Dress Code: • Neatly dressed, clean, and wellgroomed • Shoes worn at all times • No spiked heels • Shoes tied & fastened at all times • Shirts should have appropriate necklines and arm holes.
Continued… • No bare midriffs, open-backed tops, halters, or transparent garments • Tank tops/Spaghetti straps allowed only when worn with a sleeved cover shirt • No cut-off garments • Males cannot wear sleeveless shirts
Continued… • No clothing or paraphernalia related to or associated with gangs or cult affiliation • No controversial writings, drawings, or decals (firearms, alcoholic beverages, tobacco, obscene statements/illustrations, extremist groups, etc. ) • No clothing worn backwards or in an unconventional manner
Continued… • Dresses/Skirts no shorter than 4 inches above middle of kneecap • Shorts can be no shorter than 17 inches in length along outside seam and no shorter than 4 inches from middle of kneecap
Continued… • No slacking; belts must be worn • No form fitting garments • No underwear/sweat pants/pajama pants can be worn as outerwear • No oversized pants and shirts • No sunglasses, hats, caps, bandannas, curlers, picks, or other head coverings
Continued… • No metal chains, spiked apparel, or accessories • No holes, rips, or tears above knee • No facial jewelry, visible tattoos, or ear stretchers • Shirts, t-shirts, athletic jerseys, blouses, etc. must be tucked in pants or skirts
Continued… • • Hair must be clean No hair worn in eyes No extreme hair colors Coats may not extend below knees and will be placed in cubbies upon arrival to school • Only sweaters & sweatshirts that do not cover pockets may be worn during the school day
Continued… • Only mesh or clear back packs • Principal has the final say in dress code
Electronic Devices, Games, Etc. • No electronic devices of any kind are allowed on school campus-including buses!
Consequences • 1 st: device confiscated; parent has to pick up in office • 2 nd: device confiscated & returned to parent at end of grading period • 3 rd: device confiscated & returned at end of semester or a minimum of 3 days ISI served & parent may pick up in office • 4 th: device confiscated & returned at end of current school year
Drills • Fire & intruder drills: monthly • Severe weather & chemical drills: twice/semester • Procedures taught during first two weeks of school.
Severe Weather • Parents requested NOT to check out students. • Students will be held if severe weather occurs upon dismissal time. • Parents should listen to radio for information rather than call school.
School Closings • Decisions made before 6: 30 a. m. • Released to media from superintendent’s office • Listen to local radio or television • Listen for Oxford City Schools not Calhoun County Schools
Emergency Weather Forms • Parents/Students should have a plan in place for early dismissals due to emergency weather. • Written notification from the parent is required if changes are made-no phone calls or faxes.
Head Lice • Nothing to do with cleanliness • Students checked monthly • If found, students must stay home until nits are removed. • Parent/Guardian must accompany child for a re-check prior to re-admittance. • Absences are excused for first occurrence of head lice.
Medication • No type of medication allowed in student possession • If caught, students are subject to ISI/OSS or expulsion.
Electives • 45 minutes daily • 6 th: choice of all-year band or 12 week rotation of art, music, and technology
Harassment • Zero tolerance • See OCS Code of Conduct for consequences
Intercom Use, Announcements, & Deliveries • Intercom use will be limited to necessity • Announcements delivered via email • No flowers, balloons, etc. to be delivered to students at school.
Internet Use • Must complete required permission form to use internet • Must complete permission form in order to display photograph on internet (school website)
Library • Research • Enrichment • Individuals with passes or classes may visit • Lost or damaged books must be paid for
PTC • • Parent-Teacher Connection Quarterly meetings Helps plan student events Dues: $3. 00 individuals; $5. 00 corporate membership
Physical Education • Will receive numerical grade • All students required to participate unless a doctor’s note is presented. • Parents may send a note for up to 2 days.
P. E. Rules • • Keep hands, feet, & objects to self Use appropriate language No food or drinks Take care of equipment Soft-sole shoes only Shorts under dresses Follow ALL safety rules
Programs & Field Trips • Attendance is counted as with any other day. • Students with discipline problems will be required to have a parent/guardian accompany them on trip. • If behavior is severe, student may lose privilege to go on trip.
Promotion Standards • Promotion based on student performance • Decision made by teacher & principal • Parent conferences recommended • Students must meet criteria outlined in OCS Code of Conduct.
Registration Requirements • Must be registered by a custodial parent • Birth certificate • Custody documents • Immunization records • Proof of residence • Social security card
Report Cards • • 9 week reporting system Computer-generated report cards 90 -100 = A 80 -89 = B 70 -79 = C 60 -69 = D 59 & below = F
Continued… • Honor roll will be recognized for students earning all As or As & Bs on each 9 week report card. • Conduct & elective grades of U will result in removal from honor roll.
Returned Checks • $30. 00 fee • After two checks have been returned, the school reserves the right to refuse to accept future checks from that account.
School Day • 7: 00 - school opens • 7: 22 – dismissed to class • 7: 30 – instructional day begins, announcements made, tardy bell • 10: 55 – lunch begins • 2: 55/2: 57 – load car riders & buses

Teacher-Parent Conferences • Scheduled through secretary at 2413896 • Scheduled during planning period • Encouraged to schedule at least one per year • Can contact teacher through website
Telephone • Used only in emergencies • Leave messages for appropriate school personnel • Take care of lunch money, projects, folders, etc. before leaving home.
Textbooks • Property of state of Alabama & public school system • Keep clean inside and out • No marking with pen or pencil • Pages free of fingerprints • Avoid turning down, tearing, etc. pages • Refrain from placing the book where it can become damaged
Continued… • Lost or damaged textbooks must be paid for.
Visitors • Sign in at front desk and secure visitor’s badge • Call & schedule conferences ahead of time • Teachers not available to visit before school begins • Those visitors seen without app. badges will be asked to return to front office
Withdrawals • Report to guidance office • Textbooks & library books should be returned prior to withdrawal
