Good morning/afternoon Mrs. Mc. Guiness and fellow class mates. At the start of the term I was assigned a book called The Odyssey means long journey. Today I would like to focus your attention on one of the characters in the work, to me who has had the hardest journey to gain power and that is Zeus.
People know Zeus as the Thunderbolt or king of all Gods but no one really knows who he is. If I asked you now to tell me one fact that you know about him would you be able to answer it? This is why I choose Zeus.
Zeus had a pretty rough childhood. He is the son of Cronus and Rhea, but Rhea bore Zeus up in secret to protect him from his father because his was building an army to kill his son who was getting to powerful. Zeus killed his father releasing the giants, Cyclopes and hecotonchires from imprisonment and in return the Cyclopes gave Zeus the knowledge to craft thunderbolts.
Zeus’ powers are further indicated by his symbols of the eagle, the bull and a full grown oak tree. These symbols represent knowledge and strength. When Zeus became the king of all Gods he married his blood related sister Hera, but had a number of mistresses which ended up resulting in numerous children.
Athena’s mother was one of the mistresses that had a relationship with Zeus behind Hera’s back. Hera tried to dispose the mistresses one by one until Zeus found out and punished her. Zeus relationship to mortal people is very dull.
‘’These mortals do like to blame their sorrows on us don’t they. But they cause most of they own troubles. ’ This is a quote from the Odyssey, Zeus says this to his daughter Athena because he thinks it’s unfair to blame someone else for their own problems.
Zeus decided to release Odysseus from his punishment and to look over him as he starts his long journey home. Athena is sent to guide Odysseus and his son Telemachus so that they could reunite and work as a team to kill the suitors. Zeus stands for what’s right and wrong so when Odysseus men went behind his back and ate an oxen.
Zeus was incredibly powerful and indeed terrifying when angry, so Zeus and sent a lightning bolt and destroyed his ship. Odysseus was the only one to be spared. It was his punishment for not listening and respecting a gods’ order. In the graphic novel Zeus never sets foot on the earth instead he watches over everyone and guides them in the right direction.
Zeus sends eagles to protect people who deserve the right to live. When Odysseus goes to different places looking for hospitality the Kings and Queens would say ‘Zeus watches over all baggers. ’ He sends his children to appear in front of mortals so they listen and obey any orders that come from Zeus.
A journey is a test to see if you are mentally and physically strong enough. Zeus took years to become the alter mite God. It took years for Odysseus to final return home from war. I hope you have at least learnt one thing from my speech is that Zeus never gives up he is a thunderbolt. Thank you for listening.
