Introduction Ryanair is an airline company and began operating in 1985, originally flying daily from Waterford in Ireland to Gatwick. Ryanair will carry 131 m customers this year connecting over 205 destinations with over 2, 000 flights per day. Ryanair’s workforce is about 11, 458 including 4, 200 pilots. Recent conflicts between Ryanair and its pilots, resulted in a number of flights being cancelled, causing negative publicity.
What is Conflict? Conflict is defined as an incompatibility of goals or values between two or more parties in a relationship, combined with attempts to control each other and antagonistic feelings toward each other. (Fisher, 1990) The nature of conflict within Ryanair The conflict between Ryanair and pilots occurred because Ryanair forced pilots to work under the severe terms and conditions for its profits; moreover, it ignored pilots’ needs. Therefore, the overall conflict is linked to communication and motivation.
Types of Conflict Functional Conflict helps organisational goals to be achieved and enhance organisational performance. Dysfunctional Conflict prevents organisational performance; hence, this type of conflict does not contribute to organisational goals. The conflict in Ryanair is dysfunctional because the organisational performance level is quite low, and conflict level is high.
Sources of Conflict Types of conflict Sources of conflict represent the difference between individuals in : 1 – Values 2 – Personal goals 3 – Abilities 4 – Lack of resources usually occur between different departments or level of decision making for : 1 – Group values 2 – Group goals 3 – Resources availability 4 – Power sources Individual conflict Group conflict Organisation conflict 1 – Limited resources 2 – Pressures to meet the target 3 – Lack of clarity in goals and target 4 – Miscommunication
Sources of conflict in Ryanair The current source of conflict in Ryanair is a combination of group and organisation conflict. The main policy of the company is reducing the running cost as much as possible to compete with other rivals. Such policies create pressures on all departments and groups, pilots in particular.
Conflict Resolution The conflict resolution methods 1. The win-lose methods 2. The lose-lose methods 3. The win-win approach Ryanair preferred the win-win approach 1. Offering more incentives to pilots and other groups 2. Approving new employment contractual conditions 3. Scheduling more training and recruitment
Conclusions When conflict is not well-managed, people do not focus on organisational goals. Organisations need to; Ømotivate individuals through an improvement of work environment Øcommunicate with individuals to understand each other If those are carried out, conflict could be functional and organisational goals could be focused.
Recommendations Ryanair should continue to use win-win approach so that it could strengthen a its relationship with employees and gain their trust Balance to meet its employees needs should be maintained, otherwise decline phase might start shortly.
