Mission protect the bay and keep the bay clean! The New Chesapeake Bay Protectors` mission is to try to help with every problem or issue that will affect the bay. We are a new group but we are positive and confident that we will get enough helpers to fight against contamination that will help us for a better future. Also to have a healthy environment for every species that live in the bay.
Issues or problems 1. Agriculture • 2. Now days, farmers are using chemicals to kill any bugs or pests that will affect farmers` crops. Farmers` Waste • 3. Farmers use the chicken waste to fertilize their lands. But this farmers don’t use all of the chicken waste in their lands so the rest of the chicken waste; they throw this waste to the rivers. Over Harvesting • 4. Fishmongers have new ways of fishing. This way that this fishmongers are using is with a net; this net is huge and when they use this net; they wipe out so many fishes or population even baby or eggs fishes. Run-off • 5. When we have rain, this rain water brings all kind of pollutants such as: pet waste, sediment, fertilizers, pesticides, oil, and automotive fluids when this water flows in our streets. Eventually these pollutants will reach a river and the bay. Oil/Chemical spills • Oil/chemical spills create a huge damage in the bay such as diseases in the skin and deformations in the creatures or animals that live in the Chesapeake environment
Continue 6. Air Pollution • 7. Since the factories came to USA the air pollution increase dramatically in the bay. the state of Maryland is the second with the worst traffic and ozone problems due to many cars and power plants. Land Use • 8. In the past when we had the colonies the bay had more forest land than stress, houses, and people. This means that the bay has less natural filters and more pollution goes to the way due to the bad use of the land. Water Pollution • 9. Water pollution is a big thing to people is trying to save in the bay; this happens when chemicals or dangerous foreign substances are introduced to water, including chemicals, sewage, pesticides and fertilizers from agricultural runoff, or metals like lead or mercury. Noise Pollution • Boats has a noisy and loud that creates a harmful sounds that upsets whales and short lives In other ocean species. 10. Dead Zones • Dead zones occur when there is no oxygen in the water so any species that live in the ocean will eventually die. This also occur when excessive nitrogen and phosphorus pollution from human activities cause flow into the water
Solutions 1. Agriculture • 2. Farmers should use less chemicals specially the phosphorous because when the customers buy these crops they will wash them and this water will go to rivers, then the rivers will go to the bay Farm Waste • 3. Farmers shouldn't throw the chicken waste in the rivers; they should restore the waste and use it in another opportunity Over Harvesting • 4. Our government should have more strict laws about fishing and fishmongers should be penalized if they fish more than they usually fish Run-off • 5. The government should be more strict enforcing people to recycle. Also to enforce and have more recycle places so all of these pollutants wont go to any river and wont reach the bay Oil/Chemical spills • Our government should be very severe with the punishment to factories or boats that export oil when they spill oil into the water
Continue 6. Air Pollution • 7. The power plants should be more restricted with the smoke that they are creating and should buy new equipment that will produce less smoke and people should get rid off of old cars Land Use • 8. We as the people should take care more of the land in the bay by recycling all of the garbage and planting more natural filters (trees, plants, etc. ) Water Pollution • 9. People and the bay and states around the bay should not throw garbage in the streets and try to use less chemicals so this doesn’t affect the water in the bay Noise Pollution • Since we had the best technology in the world, we should build new boats that create less sound 10. Dead Zones • People should use less chemicals like nitrogen and phosphorus or try not to throw them in the water. After having a dead zone we should clean that because other animals will eat them and they will be intoxicated.
Future 1. Chemical Contaminations • 2. Nuclear plants and factories should be reconstruct or renew so less chemicals are use and less chemicals will be delivery into any river and so this rivers don’t bring this chemicals into the bay. Air pollution • 3. People that lives in the bay should have less cars or new cars and have more bicycles so the smoke from the cars don’t affect the environment of the bay. Land Use • 4. People that lives in the bay should plant more trees and more vegetation so they bay will have more natural filters and this will create more oxygen for the species Education • 5. Schools should have a class about the bay so all the teenagers will start to think about their future with out the bay. With out the bay our environment wont be healthy. Also teenagers will help the to take care the bay in the future and will persuade more people to help to fix the bay. Storm Water Runoff • All the water that the rain brings into our city goes down hill, goes to the rivers and then reaches the bay but the bad thing about this is that all of the streets have garbage or any pollutant that will affect the bay. So we should have more recycle garbage cans so all of these garbage doesn’t reach the bay and eventually the bay.
Proposed Legislation Dear Governor of Maryland my interest group The New Chesapeake Bay Protectors want to propose a legislation so that we all can work together for the benefit of our state and our bay. Our propose is to have a requirement or mandatory class in every High Scholl of the state. By this we mean that every student will have a different vision and will know what is going on in a our environment. Also we will be preparing them for the future so the bay can have a better future. Finally these students will help us to persuade more people to help us to fix and have a better bay in the future. Thanks
