What is it? �Rheumatoid Arthritis is a long-term disease that affects the joints. The joints and surrounding tissues become inflamed. �Rheumatoid Arthritis is an autoimmune disease. Autoimmune means that the body’s immune system accidentally attack’s healthy tissue.
Who gets it? �Rheumatoid Arthritis can occur at any age but is more common at middle age. �Anyone can get RA, but women are more likely to get it then men. �Other factors linked to who gets RA are genetics, hormone changes, and infection.
What Part of the Body is Affected? �Joints on both sides of the body, including wrists, fingers, knees, feet, and ankles, are usually affected.
Treatments �The treatment process for Rheumatoid Arthritis is usually life-long. �If aggressive treatment is started early enough it may delay destruction of the joints. �Treatment includes: medications, physical therapy, exercise, better nutrition plan, and possible surgery.
Research Being Done �Over time, research has increased greatly, which has tremendously expanded our knowledge of the immune system. �The National Institutes of Health(NIH) conducts a wide variety of research at it’s headquarters, universities and medical centers across the country.
Is There a Cure? �Unfortunately there is no cure for RA. But, there are very intensive treatments that can help to keep the disease under control.
