By: Ellis Ernest Shackleton, was an Irish explorer who was born ion the 15 th February 1874 and died on the January the 5 th, 1922. In 1901 Shackleton joined an expedition to the Antarctic. He was sent home early due to bad health. Devoted to creating a legacy, he led the Trans-Antarctic Expedition. Disaster struck when his ship, the Endurance, was completely crushed by ice. He and his crew drifted on sheets of ice for months until they reached Elephant Island. Shackleton eventually rescued his crew, all of whom survived the ordeal. Ernest and his crew members were stranded in Antarctica for 497 days. The terribly fated trip saw Shackleton's ship, the Endurance become trapped in ice for 10 months before it sank, but luckily not one of the expedition's members nor dogs died. Ernest had 3 siblings with Ernest's daughter. Helen Shackleton and her sister Kathleen Shackleton, then his little brother Frank Shackleton, And Ernest's daughter Cecily. Ernest also had his mother and father, Henrietta Letitia Sophia Gavan and his father Henry Shackleton. Ernest Shackleton had died at the young age of 47 years old.
