Pen Name: Lewis Carroll
Most Known for: His most well known works are: Through the Looking Glass and What Alice Found There and Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.
What Disability Did He Have? Carroll was Epileptic and deaf in one ear from a previous illness. He also had a stutter making it hard for him to carry on conversations with adults.
A neurological disorder marked by sudden recurrent episodes of sensory disturbance, loss of consciousness, or convulsions, associated with abnormal electrical activity in the brain. Symptoms: Temporary confusion, a staring spell, uncontrollable jerking movements of the arms and legs, loss of consciousness or awareness, and psychic symptoms. EPILEPSY Can be focal or general Epilepsy. A group of related disorders characterized by a tendency for recurrent seizures. Non- identifiable causes could stem from genetic influence, head trauma, brain conditions, infectious disease, prenatal injury, and developmental disorders.
Effects of Dyslexia on Carroll • Feeling of falling down a hole while growing or shrinking. • Micropsia growing or shrinking is cause by partial epilepsy or drugs. • Feeling of weightlessness • Sense of growing unreality, made him feel strange like another person.
Overcoming his Epilepsy He read and told stories to children. He felt that surrounding himself with non-judgmental young minds made him more at ease. Being able to dive into storytelling, writing, drawing, and photography allowed him to release everything he was thinking.
Hmmm… I Did Not Know…. • Micropsia is a form of migraine which is also called the “Alice in Wonderland Syndrome”. This gives off the feeling of getting bigger and smaller like Alice did in the story. • The Mad Hatter that Carroll wrote about ( My All Time Favorite!!) was said to have Heavy Metal Poisoning. This was common from the hat felting industry in those times. This is why he was so “mad” • Carroll always dreamed of being a Priest. He never made it but he was a Deacon.
