• Write about things you have experienced • Writing about things that you do not have a connection with is like writing a research paper! • You should talk about something that you know about, use your voice in discussing your topic, not a web editor’s! • Write about things that mean something to you. When you write with passion your writing sounds much better. • If the topic you choose is not a topic you enjoy, it will show up in your writing.
Examples • Example 1 - If you are going to write about a hockey game, write about a game you went to, not about a game you heard about. • Example 2 - if your writing a respect life essay, write about a topic that you have been effected by. If no one in your family smokes, don’t write about smoking.
/Support the main idea by telling how, what, when, where, why, how much, or how many. Try to elaborate on your topic and get as much information as possible. /Supporting details helps your reader understand the points you are trying to express.
Examples Example 1 - WRONGI got a new puppy. RIGHT- I got a new puppy, his name is Spot and he is brown. We got him in Canada.
§When writing, try to stay on one topic. §Try not to drift away from the main idea you based your writing on. § When you switch from one topic to another, you could loose the readers attention or confuse them.
Examples §Example 1 - If you are doing a report on King Tut, discussing the economy of Egypt in the dynasty that took charge after King Tut would be considered wandering from the topic.
§ When choosing a topic, know your boundaries. If you do not know anything about your topic you will not be able to elaborate on the topic. This means that your writing will be boring and not interesting.
Examples § Example 1 - if you are assigned a report on an a jungle animal and you have a choice of your animal, try choosing a tiger, not an anteater.
§Teachers see the same ideas all the time. §For every topic there are many common subjects, and also many very good topics that are not very common. §Try using fresh new ideas to “wow” your teacher.
Examples Example 1 - Its Black History Month. Your teacher assigns you a report. You can choose any important black person that made an impact on society. Rosa Parks is not a fresh topic. Try using someone new, like Rubin Carter.
Make the main ideas stand out §If you write about a numerous amount of topics, you should write more about one topic than another to make the reader know that this is your strongest point.
Examples § Example 1 - If you are writing an essay about U. S. Legislative Branch, but you want to include information about the other two branches in your essay, make sure you talk mostly about the Legislative branch.
§When writing, if your topic is to broad, it may become hard to follow for the reader. §Topics that are to broad are hard to elaborate on and are hard for the reader to understand.
Examples Example 1 - When doing a report on famous presidents try to pick one or two presidents so your reader isn't trying to remember what you said.
§ When developing your topic in your writing try to make the topic existing. §Make the topic appeal to your reader. §If your topic is not interesting you will bore your reader and loose your interest.
Examples §Example 1 - Try to use more fresh and new facts about your topic. By doing this you can excite your reader and interest them In your topic.
