History ØFollowing the Television Act of 1954 which made commercial television in the UK possible, ITV first began broadcasting in 1955 on Channel 3 in the London area. ØBy 1973 there were 15 separate Channel 3 regional broadcasting licences and each of the regional licences was run by a separate company. ØSince the merger ITV has expanded its family of channels with the launch of ITV 2 in 1998, ITV 3 in 2004, ITV 4 in 2005 and CITV in 2006. ØIn February 2004 ITV plc, owner of eleven of the fifteen regional licences, was born. Today ITV plc sells advertising on behalf of all fifteen of the licences and produces much of the programming broadcast on ITV channels.
Types Of Programming ØAt the start of the 21 st century, Independent Television faced criticism for including a large amount of "reality TV" programmes in the schedule, such as Celebrity Fit Club, Celebrity Wrestling and Love Island. In its defence, ITV does continue to show its major strengths in the fields of sports coverage and drama productions, and it continues to schedule ØITV's primetime schedules are dominated national news in primetime. by its soap operas, such as the flagship Coronation Street and Emmerdale. ØThese bulletins were broadcast under the ITN brand between 1955 and 1999, when a new network identity reinforced the ITV brand, resulting in the new bulletins being broadcast under the ITV News brand.
Types Of Programming ØSince the network started, Independent Television News Limited (ITN) has held the contract to produce news for the ITV Network, with 30 -minute national news ØITV covers many popular sports. The bulletins broadcast at 1: 30 pm, 6: 30 pm, and channel emphasises coverage of football, 10: 00 pm. with the channel holding the UK terrestrial Ø In May 2009, ITV acquired the rights to the UEFA Champions League and with the channel sharing coverage of broadcast live cricket from the Indian Premier League. The network also covers international football events such as the World Cup with the BBC motorsport, rugby, and other sports. ØThe network broadcasts children's programming under the CITV (Children's ITV) strand. Children's programming was originally provided during weekday afternoons and weekend mornings, however following the launch of the CITV Channel in 2006.
