Background to the ONS • The Office for National Statistics (ONS) is the executive office of the UK Statistics Authority, a non-ministerial department which reports directly to the Parliament of the United Kingdom • Charged with the collection and publication of statistics related to the economy, population and society of England Wales at national, regional and local levels • Main office is here in Newport but another significant office is in Titchfield in Hampshire, and a small office is in London • Formed on 1 April 1996 by the merger of the Central Statistical Office (CSO) and the Office of Population Censuses and Surveys (OPCS) 3
Where does the ONS fit into the UK Statistics Authority? • The UK Statistics Authority is an independent body operating at arm's length from Government as a non-ministerial department, directly accountable to Parliament • It was established on 1 April 2008 by the Statistics and Registration Service Act 2007 • Two main functions: oversight of the Office for National Statistics (ONS) and independent monitoring and assessment of official statistics across Government • Formed to legislate to render the Office for National Statistics (ONS) and the statistics it generates independent of government 4

PIC) UK Trade & Transfers International Transactions PRODCOM Annual Business Survey (ABS) Purchases Inquiry Research & Development, Information Technology Branch (RDIT) • BOPIC – produces Balance of Payments • UK Trade - produces estimates of the exports and imports of goods and services between the UK and the rest of the world • PRODCOM – produces estimates UK manufacturers' sales by product • ABS - key resource for understanding the detailed structure, conduct and performance of businesses across the UK • Purchases Inquiry – setting up new survey to measure the purchases a business has made for intermediate consumption • RDIT - produce and publish a range of quarterly and annual surveys dealing with R&D 6 activity and ICT usage by individuals, households and businesses
