Possible Problems • Data redundancy and inconsistency • duplicate data in multiple data files • Wasting storage resources • leading to data inconsistency
Possible Problems • Program-data dependence • Only specific programs can update, change and maintain the files. • Any change in a software could require a change in data accessed. • Lack of Flexibility • Only routine scheduled reports after extensive programming efforts • Data rich and information poor
Possible Problems • Poor Security • Lack of Data Sharing and Availability • Different files in different parts of the organization • Timeliness?
Databases • A database is an organized collection of related information. • It is an organized collection, because in a database, all data is described and associated with other data.
Databases • All information in a database should be related. • Separate databases should be created to manage unrelated information.
Databases • A database management system (DBMS) is a software application that is used • to create and manage databases. • It can take the form of a personal DBMS, used by one person • or an enterprise DBMS that can be used by multiple users.
Databases • Examples of database applications: • Computerized library systems • Automated teller machines • Flight reservation systems • Computerized parts inventory systems
