Bus and Instrumentation Work Status R. Bossert 2/22/2021
Bus, Expansion Loop and Instrumentation Status • Assembly and detail drawings for the bus and expansion loops are 100% complete. A new set of revisions, with some minor updates, is in process. RTDs have been moved into their proper position, bus housing lock is being added, final routing of all wires is established and being detailed. Wires for both the QH and VT wires coming from the coils are being extended for future coils. • A final version of the Q 2 bus insertion procedure, including expansion loop forming, has been completed. Minor modifications are in process based on the first CERN insertion of a bus into a Q 2. A demonstration for CERN personnel of the expansion loop forming on our mockup will also be done if desired by CERN. Parts for Q 2 bus housing kit are ready to send to CERN, but delays on the CERN side have caused this delivery to no longer be rushed. A final set of all Q 2 bus and hold-down drawings and models has been sent to CERN and incorporated into their drawings and models. • Installation of thermometers for testing in IB 1 on the cold masses was slightly delayed due to the availability of some parts, but will proceed this week. • Implementation of the special wiring for the first pre-series cold mass (MQXFA 03 and MQXFA 04) is taking place. Holes for CERN RTDs have been drilled and tapped, and RTDs can be mounted. Wiring was not long enough so new wires are being sent by CERN and will arrive shortly, after which the devices will be installed. Label system for routing of all voltage taps that are not to be terminated and all other wires has been documented tried on practice wires. Labeling of all wires and extensions where necessary can begin this week. • Production splice fixtures for the Qa and Qb ends have arrived. The fixtures will be tested as soon as technicians are available. • A companion procedure to be used with the traveler for Q 1/Q 3 bus and expansion loop is in process.
Bus, Expansion Loop and Instrumentation Status • A modified version of the bus housing lock, to be used for the preseries and production magnets, has been released for fabrication and has been ordered, with an expected arrival date of last week. • An order for bus housing parts for two more Q 1/Q 3 and two more Q 2 busses has been received. Inspection of these parts is expected to be completed this week. • All busses for Q 2 prototypes and Q 1/Q 3 preseries magnets are soldered. Some minor rework of the bus soldering fixture will take place before soldering of the production busses begins. Bullet #1, addition of thermocouples, has been done. Temperature tests have been done with a new 11 meter element. Strand sample testing been completed, at a range of temperatures between 220 C and 320 C. Bullet #2, cold block design, is taking place this week. Bullet #3 has not been started. o More thermocouples will be added to allow more detailed monitoring of the temperature. o “Cold Blocks” will be implemented to better prevent solder from wicking into the nonsoldered area. Parts for the cold block and soldering cart have been procured and design on this part is underway. o A second temperature will be added to the program to allow the bus to be heated to an intermediate level after soldering to facilitate removal from the fixture. • Discussions for the completion of the IFS and CLIQ/Kmod capillaries took place with CERN. A procedure has been provided to Fermilab and evaluated. Another meeting with CERN will take place this Wednesday to confirm details concerning this operation.
