Types of Burns
First Degree Burns First degree burns are the least serious type of burn and only damage the outer layer of the epidermis. Symptoms include red and swollen skin Healing time takes about 3 to 6 days The most common first degree burns are sun burns.
Second Degree Burns Second degree burns burn through the first layer of skin causing it to blister and turn severely red This burn takes 10 to 15 days to heal but may leave lasting pigment changes
Third Degree Burns Most severe of them all, is the third degree burn which often leaves permanent tissues damage including the skin, fat, muscles and even bones Skin appears waxy white or black and there may be little or no pain because of nerve damage
Skin Grafts Skin grafts are most commonly used for burns and involves taking healthy skin from the body, called the donor site, and attaching it to the wounded area. Skin grafts leave a permanent scar Here’s a video of a Skin Graft Procedure http: //www. youtube. com/watch? v= pvbxmm 9 inoo
The Skin Gun Developed by Professor Gerlach, the Skin-cell gun sprays a burn patient's own cells on the burn to help regenerate the skin and drastically reduce recovery time Healing takes just hours or days rather than weeks or months It leaves less scarring However the method is limited; it will not work on deep burns that go through muscle and bone
