Review: Trunk Injury-Bleeding • • Direct Pressure with Gauze Direct Pressure with Hemostatic Gauze Wound Packing Treat for Shock
Review: Head/Neck/Face Laceration • Direct Pressure with Gauze • Direct Pressure with Hemostatic Gauze • You can wrap with roller gauze • If neck --> wrap around one side of the neck and then to the opposite shoulder • If head consider wrapping around the base of the head/chin for extra pressure
Nose Bleeds- Anterior vs. Posterior • Direct Pressure with Gauze • Consider ice pack (Trick wrap ice pack in roller gauze and apply to pt. ’s nose) • Have the pt. lean their head forward and stay low to the ground (in case of LOC/dizziness/nausea) • Consider using hemostatic gauze or regular gauze to pack the nose and apply continuous pressure • If a nose bleed is severe enough (Posterior) blood can start coming out of pt. ’s tear ducts or mouth consider suction
Penetrating Trauma • Stabilize object in place • If there is a penetrating eye injury- be sure to cover both eyes to prevent consensual movement • The only time it would be appropriate to remove an object would be if it interferes with CPR • Treat for shock
Chest Trauma
Crush Injury • Splint an extremity after it is free • Elevated blood potassium levels can result from crush injuries Hyperkalemia • Potassium is critical for muscle and nerve function (especially the heart) • This is why it might be necessary to consult a physician in the field they can consider amputations
