BURGESS’ CONCENTRIC ZONE THEORY
Three dimensional view of concentric zone model
INTRODUCTION The concentric zone model, also known as the Burgess model or the CCD model, is one of the earliest theoretical models to explain urban social structures. It was created by sociologist Ernest Burgess in 1925.
Ernest Burgess Ernest Watson Burgess (May 16, 1886 – December 27, 1966) was a Canadian-American urban sociologist born in Tilbury, Ontario.
THE MODEL
THE MODEL Based on human ecology theory done by Burgess and applied on Chicago, it was the first to give the explanation of distribution of social groups within urban areas. This concentric ring model depicts urban land usage in concentric rings: the Central Business District (or CBD) was in the middle of the model, and the city expanded in rings with different land uses. It is effectively an urban version of Von Thünen's regional land use model developed a century earlier
The zones identified are: The center with the central business district, The transition zone of mixed residential and commercial uses or the zone of transition, Working class residential homes (inner suburbs), in later decades called inner city or zone of independent working men's home, Better quality middle-class homes (outer suburbs) or zone of better housing, Commuter zone.
THE CENTRAL BUSINESS DISTRICT A central business district (CBD) is the commercial and business centre of a city. In larger cities, it is often synonymous with the city's "financial district".
THE ZONE OF TRANSITION Zone of transition is the area between the factory zone and the working class zone in the Concentric zone model of urban structure devised by Ernest Burgess. The zone of transition is an area of flux where the land use is changing
THE ZONE OF WORKINGMEN’S HOMES The third area in Burgess’ scheme was designated the “ zone of workingmen’s homes”. In short it is the residential districts of middle classes.
THE ZONE OF MIDDLE CLASS DWELLERS Beyond the zone occupied by the working classes is broad area populated mainly by professional people, owners of small businesses , the managerial group , clerical forces and the like.
THE COMMUTER’S ZONE A commuting zone is an area used in population and economic analysis. In addition to the obvious use of urban areas it may be used to define rural areas which share a
SOCIOLOGICAL ANALYSE of CONCENTRIC ZONE MODEL Concentric zone model is a system of social stratification is portrayed through concentric zone. Concentric zone model is highly complex, however is a chance to increase or come up in social status as one moves away from center of the city.
SOCIOLOGICAL ANALYSE Social disorganization is confined to the first, three rings in the model. Concentric zone model bring correspondence between social occupation on one hand social mobility. This model illustrate the mixed culture is also called as “ salad bowel of culture”.
CRITIZIMS OF THIS MODEL The growth of many city is not in the model. It is unrealistic to think of modern city have one central business district, because it can be more than one. The model presumes the growth to be centripetal but many study reveals that they have various other model of patters example sector zone model.
CRITIZIMS OF THIS MODEL In the concentric zone model reports low degrees in the value of the land inner part of the city on the contrary, we can find the value of land is prized more. And more importantly this is also reason for sub urbanization and eventual expansion of city.
