Bunsen Burners and Safety Precautions The temperature and colour of the flame can be adjusted by opening or closing the adjustable air hole. The safety flame is a yellow flame (air hole completely closed) should never be used for heating. Bunsen burners should be lit with the air hole closed. When lighted Bunsen burners are not being used, the air holes should be closed to give yellow flames which are easier to see, are less hot, and so are safer. Never leave a blue flame unattended.

Tie long hair back and avoid wearing hair spray. Tuck ties in. Never put anything in the flame unless instructed to do so. Don’t turn the gas on until instructed. Always wear goggles. Combustion • Measure out 100 cm 3 of water using a measuring cylinder. • Pour into a glass beaker and place on gauze. • Take the temperature of the water. This is the start temperature. • Light bunsen burner safely. Then place on blue flame. • Heat for 3 minutes. • Record the temperature at the end and then calculate the temperature change.
