Take immediate steps to investigate. Document the investigation and inform parents. Notify the parent of the alleged victim before third business day. Notify a parent of the student alleged to have engaged in the conduct within a reasonable amount of time after the incident is reported.
Tips for Performing an Investigation Take claims and allegations seriously – no matter how trivial they may seem. Interview the parties and all possible witnesses, and be professional. The investigator must demonstrate in his or her behavior that the complaint is being taken seriously. Maintain proper documentation of the investigation, such as taking detailed interview notes or securing relevant evidence. Use discretion when talking to people in the course of the investigation. Treat all persons with dignity and respect. Know when to get help. Remain neutral. Consider using an outside investigator or other administrator to conduct the investigation if questions about the designated investigator’s impartiality arise. Take immediate and appropriate action upon conclusion of the investigation.
Closing the Investigation Write it up! Maintain Records: All participating students should have documentation saved in their file for future issues/complaints.
