WHAT IS BULLYING? DEFINITION: BULLYING IS SOMEONE WHO HAS UNDERMINED YOU AND HAS MADE YOU FEEL SMALLER MENTALLY, PHYSICALLY AND EMOTIONALLY.
WHO ARE BULLIES? � � � Bullies can be of any ethnic or racial background. Both male and female Of all ages In groups or as individual They torment and frighten others
� Physical TYPES OF BULLYING � Any forms of physical attack � Examples: hitting, kicking, pinching, � scratching, and spitting Emotional � Anything that can cause emotional pain. � Examples: spreading rumours, excluding someone from a social group, also being made the subject of malicious rumours � Cyber � Any type of bullying that is carried out by electronic devices � Examples: Text message bullying, Picture/video clip bullying mobile phone cameras, E-mailing bullying, and Chat-room bullying, etc. � via Verbal � Any form of name calling, teasing, spreading rumours, making racist remarks, making sexist or homophobic jokes, or using any form of abusive language would be considered verbal bullying.
Effects of Bullying on the victim? Sad � Depressed � Traumatized � Miserable and unable to communicate their dilemma to anyone � They feel their situation is hopeless and sometimes commit suicide �
Why do people bully others? � � � Low self-esteem To gain acceptance To gain respect Social status Financial status An individual may experience this behaviour at home and may do this to others
How to stop bullying? � � To stop hurtful behaviour we all need to respond when it occurs and take steps to prevent it. The first step is recognizing when there is a problem. Stay calm. Bullies LOVE a reaction so don't give them one. If you know of someone who doesn't like you, steer clear. Take yourself out of the situation.
How to stop bullying con’t. . . � � If the bully won't stay away from you, ignore them and walk away. It's harder for the bully to harass you if you’re not there. Don't be afraid to tell people you trust. Adults can help more than you think. They have resources that you don’t and the benefit of experience. If at first you don’t find a supportive adult, keep looking. You’ll eventually find one that will listen and help you.
