What is bullying? • Bullying is unwanted, aggressive behavior that involves a real or perceived power imbalance. The behavior is repeated, or has the potential to be repeated, over time.
Bullying Involves: • Imbalance of power: • people who bully use their power to control or harm and the people being bullied may have a hard time defending themselves. • Intent to cause harm: • actions done by accident are not bullying; the person bullying has a goal to cause harm. • Repetition: • incidents of bullying happen to the same the person over and over by the same person or group.
Verbal • Name calling • Teasing • Threats • Mocking
Physical • Hitting • Punching • Shoving
Social • Spreading rumours • Leaving someone out on purpose • Breaking up friendships
Cyber-bullying • Cyber-bullying is bullying that takes place using electronic technology. • Text messages • Emails • Social networking sites
Bystanders • Bystander: someone who is witness to an act against another person. • Some bystanders encourage the situation • Some bystanders join in • Most bystanders watch passively and do nothing • Why might people not want to get involved? • Bystander Effect: a phenomenon in which the greater the number of people present at a situation, the less likely they are to help. People are more likely to step in if there are few or no other witnesses.
