THINK ABOUT…. What are labels? Are they good or bad? • What happens when we generalize based on labels, and use stereotypes? • How does it make you feel when you are given a label you don’t like? • How does it make you feel when people react differently to you because of a label that has been placed on you?
ACTIVITY 1 - LABELS • One student per group will have a label on their forehead and or back. • Groups will engage in a brief conversation about a relevant topic: • Clothes, activities like clubs/sports, homework, hobbies, music, if they have a lot of friends or no friends ect… • Respond to your group member by their label, to show engagement with each other differs by our labels and the stereotypes attached. Act this out for few minutes. • Guess what your own label is, based on how your

ACTIVITY 2 - HOW WELL DO YOU KNOW ME? On a separate piece of paper answer the following questions. 1. What wouldn’t we know by just looking at you? 2. What is your favorite book? 3. What goal are you working towards? 4. What is your most positive personality trait? 5. What personal experiences do you have, if any, with discrimination? • DO NOT PUT YOUR NAME ON THE PIECE OF PAPER • Turn in
ACTIVITY 2 - CONTINUED • Your teacher will mix up the sheets of paper and you will find the owner of the sheet of paper based on the answers.
DISCUSSION QUESTIONSACTIVITY 2 1. How accurate were the assumptions you made about people you don’t know very well? 2. Did you learn anything about your classmates that surprised you? 3. What are the dangers of making assumptions? What is a stereotype? 4. How can assumptions about groups lead to stereotypes? 5. What can we do to prevent stereotyping?
DISCUSSION IN SMALL GROUPS With your group discuss the following: Have you seen examples of biased based incidents based on someone’s: o Race? o Religion? o Language? o Sexual Orientation? o Gender expression? o Family status? - Why do you think this happens? - Can you remember a time when you were called a name or put down for being different from others around you? o How did it feel? o What did you do?
SAFE If you are being called names or bullied, remember the four ways to stay SAFE: • Say What you Feel: Tell the person who is bullying you or calling you names the way their actions make you feel. • Ask for Help: Sometimes you can’t handle the situation yourself, and it’s ok to ask for help. Find a teacher or other school staff member to talk to. • Find a Friend: Hanging out with people who make you feel good about yourself is important, and the person calling you names might think twice before picking on you when you’re with your friends. • Exit the Area: While it may feel like you aren’t doing anything
