WHAT IS BULLYING? ★ Bullying is when someone uses their power to hurt, frighten, insult, or leave someone out ★ Bullying is done on purpose and is often repeated ★ People bully others to hurt their feelings or to hurt them physically ★ It is all about power and control
TYPES OF BULLYING ★ Physical ★ Emotional ★ Social ★ Discriminatory ★ Cyberbullying
PHYSICAL BULLYING ★ Slapping ★ Hitting ★ Pushing ★ Tripping ★ Kicking ★ Biting ★ Punching ★ Damaging someone else’s property
EMOTIONAL BULLYING ★ Name-calling ★ Insults ★ Verbal attacks ★ Threats ★ Making hurtful comments
SOCIAL BULLYING ★ Leaving someone out of group or team activities on purpose ★ Giving someone the “silent treatment” ★ Spreading rumors ★ Convincing other people not to hang out with someone
DISCRIMINATORY BULLYING This means to bully someone based on: ★ Gender ★ Where they are from ★ Who they love ★ Age ★ Religion
CYBERBULLYING ★ Using technology to hurt or intimidate another person ★ This can be in the form of social, emotional and discriminatory bullying too ★ This bullying can be harder to stop since people are able to do it anonymously
WHY DO PEOPLE BULLY? ★ To fit in or impress others ★ To control friends ★ To get attention ★To cover up their own sad or scared feelings ★They may be treated badly at home or at school and want to make other people feel bad, too. ★ Whenever we can, be kind.
WHERE DOES BULLYING OCCUR? Bullying can happen ANYWHERE ★ At home ★ In the community ★ At school, on the playground, on the school bus ★ During after school activities ★ Through cell phones ★ Through the internet ★ Through gaming platforms (like Play. Station and Xbox)
SIGNS OF BULLYING ★ Being sad, afraid, or angry ★ Avoiding things they used to enjoy: activities or hanging out with friends or family ★ Getting stomach aches or not wanting to eat
SIGNS OF BULLYING ★ Not wanting to go to school ★ Getting headaches or stomach aches ★ Having trouble sleeping or a lot of nightmares. ★ Saying that they “wish they could disappear”
GETTING HELP If you are being bullied, there are things you can do to help yourself ★ There’s safety in numbers. Try to stay with a group. ★ Do not accept the bullying, or just wait for it to stop ★ Don’t respond or fight back - just walk away ★ Tell a trusted adult – like a parent, teacher, guidance counselor, etc.
IF YOU ARE BULLYING SOMEONE ★ Take responsibility for your actions. Every action is a choice you make. ★ Stop and think before you act. Take deep breaths if you are upset. ★ Treat people how you want to be treated ★ Learn how to be a good friend ★ Ask for help: Talk to someone you trust about your feelings and problems
SUPPORTING A FRIEND ★ Believe them ★ Listen to them ★ Let them know that the bullying is not their fault and they should be treated with respect ★ Ask them to report the bullying to a trusted adult ★ Stay with your friend ★ Ignore the bully together

YOU HAVE RIGHTS ★ To be treated fairly and with respect ★ To be included ★ To feel safe ★ To be protected from abuse ★ To say “no” to unwanted behavior
YOU HAVE RESPONSIBILITIES ★ To treat others with respect ★ To not exclude others ★ To help protect others ★ To not misuse your power by bullying ★ To listen to people when they say NO!
