What is Bullying? Bullying happens when someone hurts or scares another person on purpose and the person being bullied has a hard time defending himself or herself. It typically happens over and over. Bullying can also happen online or electronically. Cyberbullying is when adolescents or children bully each other by using the Internet, cell phones, or other technology. Stop Bullying Now. (2010).
Examples of Bullying In School: Punching, shoving, and other acts that physically hurt people Spreading negative rumors about other people Keeping certain people out of a “group” Teasing in a mean way Getting certain people to “gang up” on others Stop Bullying Now. (2010).
Examples of Bullying Cont’d Electronically: Sending hurtful and malicious text, email, or instant messages Posting nasty pictures or messages about others in blogs or on Web sites Using someone else’s user name to spread rumors or lies about someone Stop Bullying Now. (2010).
Policy As stated in our Handbook at Hanover Area Junior-Senior High School: “All Students are expected to treat one another in a courteous and respectful manner. Under no circumstances are students permitted to harass, bully, or discriminate against other students or staff members through conduct or communication that is sexually-oriented or based on race, ethnicity, religion, handicap, physical differences, socioeconomic status, or sexual preferences. Students who violate this policy will be subject to disciplinary action as determined by the Hanover Area School District. ” Hanover Area Jr-Sr High School Student Handbook. (2012 -2013). Page 36.
Who Can You Go To? Guidance Counselors: Mrs. Zapotoski, Mrs. Hummer, and Mrs. Mullery School Nurse: Mrs. Namey Principals: Mr. Malloy and Mr. Kane Teachers: That you are in class with or with whom you are comfortable
What Can You Do? If you witness bullying… Report the bullying to a faculty member Even if you are afraid, it is the right thing to do Be as specific as possible…if you take notice of the approximate time, the principals can review what happened on the school ’s cameras If you told an adult and you do not think they did anything about the bullying, tell another adult Stand up to the person who is doing the bullying If you feel comfortable and safe doing this, tell a person who is bullying what she or he is doing is wrong and that they should stop You could just say, “Dave, cut it out. Nobody thinks that’s funny. ” It is not easy, so if you are not comfortable, that is okay—but be sure to tell someone
What Can You Do (Cont’d)? Support someone who is being bullied Sometimes the best thing you can do for someone is just to be there for her or him and be a friend Call your friend away from the situation This may mean sitting with them at lunch or on the bus, including them in your school or social activities, or just spending time with her or him and trying to understand what she or he is going through can make a huge difference
