Building Resilience Skipper has a dream For as long as Skipper can remember, he has wanted to write his very own book. He decides to set himself a goal to write a book about his sailing adventures on the river of life.

Building Resilience Skipper asks for feedback Skipper asks his friend to read what he has written. They point out several mistakes and make new suggestions. Skipper is very disappointed and considers giving up.
Building Resilience Everyone has failed at something at some point Here are some people who famously failed. Can you guess who they are? Her first book was rejected by 12 major publishers before going onto sell over 400 million copies Who am I? He didn’t start speaking until he was four or reading until he was seven. His teacher thought he was stupid! Who am I? He was fired by the editor of a magazine because “he lacked imagination and had no good ideas”, Who am I?
Building Resilience Failure and mistakes are okay because: 1. They are normal and happen to everyone 2. They can give us the chance to reflect on what went wrong 3. They give us the opportunity to try different ways to move forward
Building Resilience Can you remember some of the challenges I have dealt with in the past? Skipper has dealt with setbacks before While rereading his book, he is reminded of all the times he has overcome difficulties in the past on the river of life. This gives him renewed confidence that he can deal with this setback.
Building Resilience Who can get ‘on board’ with you? Can any of you offer me any help? With his friend’s feedback in mind, he decides to get more friends on board and ask for their help and suggestions. Together they help Skipper to improve his book and achieve his goal.
Building Resilience It is important to celebrate our successes
Building Resilience Skipper finally finishes his book Thank goodness he kept going because it means we have all been able to learn from his adventures on the river of life. Skipper feels really proud to know that his stories will be shared with others.
Building Resilience When was the last time you felt proud of something you’ve achieved? Always celebrate your achievement When you reach your goal, take time to enjoy the feeling of achievement and remember to thank those that helped you.

Building Resilience Class Task Together create a ‘Get on Board’ display in your class. On one side put up ideas of what you need help with? Or the other side, suggestions of who/what could help you? Family Activity Work together on a goal. The goal can be anything you want to improve. Think about who or what will help you to achieve it. Bring your ‘goal’ in to share with your class
