Building a Network Measurement Infrastructure to Enable Escience

Building a Network Measurement Infrastructure to Enable E-science Projects in Asia Pacific Putchong Uthayopas, Sugree Phatanapherom, Nopparat Noppakuat, and Maneerat Suriyapiboonwattana Thai National Grid Center Software Industry Promotion Agency(SIPA), Ministry of Information and Communication Technology, Thailand

Motivation Enabling the successful e-science projects among collaborators from multiple sites around the world require a good networking infrastructure. A measurement infrastructure that periodically measures the network performance characteristics is very useful for many reasons Enable a collaborative effort for network performance tuning possible. S E-science application and tool developers can use the knowledge learned to adapt the application to these environment. Data collected and stored can be used for fault modeling, which led to more reliable network setup.

Measurement Infrastructure in Thai. Grid Uninet NOC SCMS Iperf Thai. Grid Member Institute Thai National Grid Center Iperf SCMS Iperf

Requirement Probe Server and software Iperf SCMS (for all to all measurement and data collection) Measurement Server SCMS My. SQL Database

TIEN 2 International Link

Discussion Most of the network are being under utilized. Users and network operators do not even know it! The coordinating effort in performance tuning is required. TCP/IP has some serious limitation for long distance data transfer. Long latency severely degraded the sustainable bandwidth

Development Better information access Data is kept into database now. Better analysis tools ca be applied. Better packaging of the software Better probe Latency measurement Parallel socket management Application based network measurement

Area of collaboration Probe deployment around Asia Pacific The analysis of the results and coordinating effort in network performance optimization Development of better measurement infrastructure measurement

Thank you
