Magnet Protection Options for magnet protection: n Energy Extraction Upgrade of «OLD» Moeller Switch type In 404 -4000 – 690 VAC l Vacuum switch – to be developed l IGBT switch – comparable to SM 18 Cluster D l New AC circuit breakers l New DC circuit breakers l n n Coupling-Loss Induced Quench (CLIQ) – decided not to be used Quench heaters – decided not to be used 14 September 2018 – B 163 PRR G. Options studied Switches n n n Upgrade of «OLD» Moeller Switch type In 404 -4000 – 690 VAC l Not possible - extraction is needed with dump-resistor voltages going up to 1000 V New vacuum switch – to be developed l Development did not start yet and therefore schedule can not be met IGBT switch l Rejected because of power losses New AC circuit breakers – No alternative breakers available. No industrial partner found. Development did not start New DC circuit breakers – Possible Resistor u The energy extraction system will come with one or two dump-resistors (15 -20 k. CHF for 6 and 1 MJ version). Stored (magnetic) energy partially absorbed by dump resistors l Dump resistor replacement is foreseen and engineering 75% completed 14 September 2018 – B 163 PRR G. J. Strategy Based on knowledge and situation today: § Replace the existing system with a switch system based on new DC Electro-Mechanical Circuit-Breakers (EMCB) § No standard switch is available at CERN: Purchase an industrial Off-The -Shelf (OTS) product 14 September 2018 – B 163 PRR G. Status Today Market Survey completed high DC current Electro-Mechanical Circuit. Breakers (EMCB) and including possibility of a Turn-Key delivery Possibilities are: Secheron (CH) – willing to deliver turn key Ampultz (NL) – willing to deliver turn key – several brands Microelettrica (IT) – didn’t reply but worked with Ampulz GE-Rapid (USA) – no reply on demands since May 2018 ILOs may add other companies Functional/Technical Specification DO-31638 almost ready to be issued by purchasing.
