Builders and Scribes Instructions to Teacher Group students
Builders and Scribes - Instructions to Teacher • Group students into groups of two. They decide who is the Builder, and who is the Scribe. (They will switch for the 2 nd problem, so it doesn’t matter much. ) • The Builder gets a mini-white board (or clipboard, or desk) and a few unit blocks (e. g. rainbow cubes). The builder cannot use a marker or pencil. • The Scribe gets a white board marker. Optimally, each pair gets one spot on the classroom white board. If you don’t have enough vertical space (white boards for example), then paper and pencil will do as well, but we have found that students are more engaged and enjoy working at the white board. • The Builder lays out the problem using blocks. The Scribe is not allowed to touch the blocks. The Scribe then draws the model just as they see it on the Builder’s mini-white board (or desk) • When both team members are satisfied with the model, they talk through the arithmetic solution to the problem together, but only the Scribe can write it up on the vertical (classroom) white board. • When teams are done, they can do a gallery walk. You can make this into a scoring game if you wish, but with only 2 problems, it’s probably unnecessary.

Make an 8 -train with white blocks. Marc spent 1/8 of his birthday money on a cake. He also bought a bag of party favors. He spent twice as much on the party favors as he spent on the cake. Then he spent $25 on party music. In the end, he had $5 left over. How much did he start with?
Use white blocks. Kana has ¾ as many songs on her phone as Mira does. Lia has twice as many songs on her phone as Kana does. If Mira has 10 songs more than Kana has, how many songs does Lia have?
