HOW BUDDHISM WAS FOUND • Nepal (northern India): Siddhartha Gautama Hindu prince who lived sheltered life, saw human suffering, at age 30 started his search for a cure for suffering, left rich lifestyle. • Tried different teachings, started fasting- going without food to help clear his mind, nothing working. • Finally, meditating under Bodhi tree (fig tree) he reached nirvana (enlightenment, perfect state, like heaven) • Became the Buddha (means he who is awake) • Spread message that all can reach nirvana, escape samsara (cycle of rebirth and reincarnation), follow Buddha teachings

BUDDHA’S TEACHINGS • Buddha’s thoughts spread from India and throughout Asia, gaining more followers outside of India. • Buddhism had begun. • Buddha’s ideas reflected Hindu ideas, but totally rejected the caste system, believed you could escape reincarnation (cycle of rebirth) now by reaching nirvana. • Follow Four Noble Truths • And Follow Eight-Fold Path
THE 4 NOBLE TRUTHS OF BUDDHISM • 1. Suffering and unhappiness are part of human life. No one can escape sorrow. • 2. Suffering comes from want: material goods and our desires. Misery is caused by things we do not have, our desires. • 3. End want/desire and you end suffering. People can overcome desire and reach nirvana- (perfect peace). • 4. Follow the Eight-Fold Path to overcome desires, the path leads to enlightenment and salvation

BUDDHISM’S EIGHT-FOLD PATH • 1. Right thought- Believe that suffering exists, as told in the 4 Noble truths. • 2. Right Intent- Go towards kindness and goodness. • 3. Right Speech- Avoid gossip and lies. • 4. Right Action- Don’t harm or steal from others.
EIGHT-FOLD PATH CONTINUED • 5. Right livelihood- Reject work (jobs) that hurts others, have to work in something • 6. Right effort- Do good and prevent evil. • 7. Right mindfulness- Control your thoughts and feelings, have positive thoughts and no negative thoughts. • 8. Right Concentration- practice the proper meditation
GRADED: IN CLASS ACTIVITY DUE 9/14 • Create your Own Eight-Fold Path: be sure use the Buddha’s teachings as a guide. • Must be uploaded on Teachers Page. • Think about the Eight-Fold Path and what it meant to Buddhism; now try to think of what you might include in your own 8 Fold Path. • You can decorate it as you wish: make it school appropriate, our principal will see your work! • We will present our work individually if time permits.
HOW BUDDHA CHALLENGED HINDUISM • Rejected many ideas in the Vedas. • Challenged the Brahmins, people don’t need the Hindu priests or rituals. • Opposed the caste system, everyone can reach nirvana now in their current lifetime (do not have to move into upper castes).

BUDDHISM SPREADS • 200 years after Buddha’s death, the teachings went through India. • Asoka, an Indian king, built Buddhist schools and temples. • Missionaries-(Buddhist monks) were sent to spread the religion throughout Asia. • Silk Road would help spread Buddhism.
BUDDHISM SPLITS • 2 major branches of Buddhism after disagreements. • 1. Mahayana- People can use Buddha’s teachings to help reach nirvana. They adjusted/changed the teachings. • 2. Theravada- Follow the teachings of Buddha as they were written originally.
REFLECTION IN CLASS ASSIGNMENT • 1. In your opinion what part of the Eight-Fold path do you agree with the most and explain why? • 2. Which one of the Eight-Fold path do you think would be the most difficult to follow and explain why? • 3. Do you agree or disagree with Buddhism’s Four Noble Truths and that all suffering comes from desires? Explain your answer.
