About functional shape modeling Functional goals and design constraints are focused. Geometry is derived through behavioral features. Volumes and features contain inherent behaviors and interact. How different behaviors of functional features interact together to produce the final shape? Relevant shape modeling methodologies apply and supposed to know (see previous lectures in this course). László Horváth UÓ-JNFI-IAM http: //users. nik. uni-obuda. hu/lhorvath/
Entities in functional shape model Body and solid functional set. Functional Feature It is inserted in a solid functional set. Characterized by inherent behaviors. Solid Functional Set Includes functional features. Multiple and nested functional sets organize the functional specifications. The solid functional set is the resulting shape of the functional specifications it contains. Curves and surfaces are included in functional sets. Shell and draft Properties Solid functional set may include shell and draft property features. They specify the thickness of the walls and mold process properties globally for the solid functional set and areas of the shape, respectively. Centralized way of modifications. László Horváth UÓ-JNFI-IAM http: //users. nik. uni-obuda. hu/lhorvath/
Functional features Special behaviors and considerations apply. Features represent material and empty spaces. Inherent: no history dependence applies (before of after creating of feature). Inherent behavior of existing inside or outside of a material feature within the same body. Features are defined by how they interact with another feature. Functional behaviors: shellable, protected, internal, external, added, core. Volume type is defined according to the required results. Depending on the type, function of a feature is add or subtract material as well as increase decrease or protect a spatial volume. Fitting shape into another shape Shape is fit into another shape in a different solid functional set. Protected area is defined. It is applied to take into account the space that will be occupied by shape in the same mechanism. László Horváth UÓ-JNFI-IAM http: //users. nik. uni-obuda. hu/lhorvath/
Functional features Features with inherent behaviors and specific design intents that are applied to other features to modify them. Each functional feature performs a function, such as creating walls, adding material to the inside or outside of a shape feature, or creating and protecting an empty space. Retain behavior. For example, pocket has an inner protected volume, which means that no other volumes in the same body can penetrate this area. László Horváth UÓ-JNFI-IAM http: //users. nik. uni-obuda. hu/lhorvath/
Basic functional features Added Feature Adds material to both the outside and inside of material volumes that it intersects within the same body. Shellable Feature Added volume and inherits the shell properties of the body. Protected Feature Material cannot penetrate the protected volume. Protected feature reserves space for another features or for volumes that must be kept open. László Horváth UÓ-JNFI-IAM http: //users. nik. uni-obuda. hu/lhorvath/
Basic functional features Core Feature A spatial volume replaces material volume only where the core feature intersects with the shellable or external feature within the same body. Interconnected core: Offset of the union of all shellable features contained within the same solid functional set. Isolated core: Offset of only shellable features geometry. Cutout Removes material and creates a protected volume. The cutout is shelled as you apply it to a shellable feature. László Horváth UÓ-JNFI-IAM http: //users. nik. uni-obuda. hu/lhorvath/
Basic functional features Internal feature Adds material only to the inside of the shellable and core feature that it intersects within the same body. Shellable properties are not inherited. External feature Adds material to the outside of another material volume that it intersects within the same body. László Horváth UÓ-JNFI-IAM http: //users. nik. uni-obuda. hu/lhorvath/
Functional features Reinforcements The material is added to the outside of material volumes that it intersects. Rib Adds strength to a shelled body and is typically applied inside a shelled body. László Horváth UÓ-JNFI-IAM http: //users. nik. uni-obuda. hu/lhorvath/
