Skills and Tactics required in Rounders
Batting in Rounders • What is it? • How do we do it? • Explain a situation when the skill could be used in a game.
Batting Practice • A drill to improve your batting is shown in the diagram. The batter will stand in the batting box, and will be delivered balls continuously. The batter does not have to run. The batter should aim to hit each ball in the directions shown, where there will be two sets of cones acting as gates, one 30 m away and one 50 m away. If the ball goes past the first set of cones, the batter scores one point, if it goes past the second, they get 2 points. They only score points if the ball goes to a different set of cones each hit. The batter continues doing this until they can score a minimum of 20 points from 20 hits.
Long Barrier • What is it? • How do we do it? • Explain a situation when the skill could be used in a game.
Long Barrier Practice • The long barrier can be improved by completing the following drill. • 1) Squat in the correct position and have a friend roll a ball directly at you. Repeat until you are successful 10 times in a row. • 2) Stand up and have a friend roll a ball directly at you, you must squat into the correct position as the ball arrives. Repeat until you are successful 10 times in a row. • 3) Stand up and have a friend roll a ball towards you, you must move to the right line then squat into the correct position as the ball arrives. Repeat until you are successful 10 times in a row. • As you improve, the ball should be rolled harder, faster and in different directions.
Backstop • What is it? • How do we do it? • Explain a situation when the skill could be used in a game.
Backstop • • The backstop is indicated below in the red t-shirt. A drill to improve your ability to play the role of backstop is: 1) Stand at backstop in the correct position, with your knees bent and your hands cupped and presented to the bowler so they have somewhere to aim. The bowler delivers a ball directly to you, you catch it and return it alternately to bowler and second base. 2) Add in a batter who stands in the batting square but does not attempt to hit the ball. Repeat as above. 3) Add in a batter who stands in the batting square and attempt sto hit the ball. Repeat as above.
Bowling in Rounders • What is it? • How do we do it? • Explain a situation when the skill could be used in a game.
Bowling in Rounders • In order to practice your bowling in rounders, you should stand in the bowling box and ask a friend to be backstop in the correct position. You should then bowl 10 balls at them, making sure that they reach the backstop’s hands and that the backstop doesn’t have to move to collect a wide or high ball. • Once the basic skill is mastered, a batter should be added to hit the ball. The bowler should try to bowl fast enough to cause the batter to rush their shot and therefore decrease their chances of scoring a rounder.
