The Perfect Employee • What words would you associate with personal attributes? • If you were an employer what attributes would you want your employees to have?
Activity – Personal Attributes • In pairs: – Look at Activity 2 – Sort the words into two lists: • Attitudes • Skills and attributes – How would you rank them in order of preference? – Discuss you decisions with your partner
General Attributes and Skills Have you too much or too little of these? : • • Planning Organisational Time Management Team Working • • Verbal Written Numeracy Creativity Take each heading and: • create a short definition about that the general attribute is • write one paragraph about how good you are at this attribute • do you know anyone that is particularly good at it? • state how you think this attribute would matter to an employer Create a Word Template

Job related Technical knowledge, e. g. : • Knowledge of HTML 5, CSS 3 and Java. Script if going for a web designers role • What technical knowledge will the following people need? – Airline employees – employees are expected to respond in the same language that passengers used – Sales representative – drive, have a clean driving licence. Some may provide a car but other employers may ask that you have your own vehicle – IT technician – your role is fixing PCs so you and employer would need to be able to use hand tools such as a screwdriver as well as using electronic testing equipment such as a multi meter.
Procedures • Working procedures and systems – • • • Shift work – working nights or at weekends Risk levels – fire brigade/police/teachers/doctors Theoretical – evacuation/fire drill procedures, sickness and absenteeism procedures, disciplinary procedures Some of the procedures in place at Selby College
Activity 1 – Technical Skills • In groups of 2 or 3 search the internet for examples of job adverts that specify the technical skills needed for IT vacancies. List the attributes that employers seem to be seeking. • Make a list of the technical skills that you have and grade your own level of competence. • Compare your list with that of your group.
