BSW – Ideas – leave a legacy… Here a few suggestions: • Plant some pollinator-friendly plants and seeds, such as lavender, buddleia and valerian. These are very attractive to bees and butterflies. • Leave a patch of field to grow unchecked. Hopefully this will encourage wild-flowers and attract insects. • Set up a compost area in the school grounds. Raw food waste can be composted and turned into fertiliser for plants. Observing over time! • Make a bug hotel. These can be built from wooden pallets, branches and bricks, and provide places for insects and other small invertebrates to live. Smaller versions can be hung on walls. • https: //schoolgardening. rhs. org. uk/resources/project/make-a-bug-hotel • https: //schoolgardening. rhs. org. uk/Resources/Activity/Make-a-simplebug-or-ladybird-home • Hang bird boxes on trees or high walls to provide places for birds to build nests. Some bird boxes include built-in webcams, so the children can observe the birds without causing any disturbance. • Hang bird and insect feeders around the school grounds. • Build a pond to encourage frogs and insects. This doesn’t have to be very deep. • Create a tree trail • Make a weed garden • Make a bog garden • Get bats! https: //www. bats. org. uk/advice/gardening-for-bats
