Ice Breaker Exercise • Pair with another classmate and tell him or her your name, the agency where you are completing your field placement and something surprising about yourself. • The other classmate will introduce you and share this information with the class.
Transition and Communication • Difficult to transition to a new instructor but we will make it as comfortable as possible with open and frequent communication. Field Courses • One syllabi for both courses • Financial aid requirement for both • SOW 4941 – BSW Field Education – Monitor hours in field placement – 420 hours for BSW Field (250 last semester; 170 left) – Approximately 14 hours weekly for 12 weeks – Satisfactory evaluation needed – Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory
Field Courses Cont. • SOW 4515 – BSW Integrative Seminar – Academic assignments/discussions related to applying theory and concepts to field; – Discussions regarding field placements • Share resources • Staff cases together • Discuss navigating systems and political factors – Letter grade assigned Need to be registered for both classes!
Schedule • We will meet next Tuesday (5/21/19) and then we will meet every other week • On the weeks we don’t meet, the discussion forums serve as your “classroom time” – Discussion questions surround more practical topics such as self care, resumes, etc.
Syllabus/Classroom Policies • New link for BSW Field Manual included (pg. 6) • Late policy (pg. 15) – For assignments (Micro/Macro project)/DQs/1159 pm • Course is designed to be experiential/discussion based – Laptops/phones – Sign in Sheet and Attendance (Review policy, including 10 minutes late or leaving early = 1 absence; communication/documentation) (pg. 13) – Professionalism in classroom – Discussion encouraged
IPT • Update information in IPT (Knights email, add picture if comfortable doing so) • Try to create ease in this system in the beginning and develop habits of keeping up with forms. • Reach out to me with any issues (i. e. need password reset for yourself or supervisor, can’t see form, etc. ). • If you receive(d) an email regarding an IPT issue, please respond
Forms in General • Initials of supervisors should be obtained on a weekly basis • “Professional discussions” with supervisors • At the end of the semester signatures of the field instructor and the student are required – Record of Field Hours Log – Supervisory Log – Evaluation of the Student – Learning Contract
Record of Field Hours Log • Initialed each week by supervisor • “Extra Hours Earned” column – To notate a mistake (can add hours accordingly) – To note hours on weekends – Document hours earned/short from last semester • Use. 25 for 15 minute increments • Signatures – If task supervisor is switched to field instructor for signing off purposes
Documenting Extra Hours Earned or Short from Last Semester • Students are able to carry over 20 hours from the previous semester. • Dr. Vance allowed you to be within 10 or 20 hours of 250 last semester – Documenting in the Record of Field Hours log extra hours (add to “Extra Hours Earned” column on 1 st line and add hours to the others earned that week)
Supervisory Log • Students are to receive 1 hour of supervision per week – Sitting down for an hour or on the spot supervision – Provide opportunities to staff cases and difficult scenarios or circumstances – Students are to write in the topics for supervision and the supervisor is to initial it each week.
Evaluation of the Student • Same form for Semester 1 (Spring) and Semester 2 (Summer) evaluation • Opening the form-supervisor will have to click on part time or full time to populate form (student will then be able to view ratings and sign) • “ 3”s for final evaluation – meets competencies; could have “ 2”s last semester • Your signature is required too
Learning Contract • Should guide practice – encourage you to reference it in supervision • Signatures are needed
Review Forms • Review forms to make sure they are all there and signatures are provided from last semester • Either enter this on questionnaire or email me if you do not know right now
Assignments • Micro/Macro project – Collect outlines – Classroom sessions will surround various steps in the planned change process (opportunity for questions and processing – Collaborate with your field instructor – How much discussion has been done on this already? • Field Logs (2) – Advocacy (Just updated today) – Termination
Assignments Cont. • Self Evaluation Survey & Evaluation of Field Placement • Discussion Questions (5 total on weeks we do not meet face to face) – Answer initial discussion prompt and respond to one other participant (try to post early to become part of discussion) – Should be reflective and substantive. – Reiterate late policy (discussions constitute the “attendance” of class) No more presentations!

Roles in Field Education • Field Instructor – Provides supervision (should be a BSW or MSW) • Task Instructor – Oversees day to day activities (may be a social worker but does not need to be) • Field Seminar Instructor/Liaison – teaches Seminar class; liaison between student and agency – Processing issues; Empowerment – Assistance, if needed – Office hours
My Role Expanded-Teaching • Teach Seminar class – Announcements (setting preferences) – Process issues (Office hours, respond in 24 hours) – Provide feedback within a week • Monitor forms/hours • Assign grade (not field instructor)
My Role Expanded-Liaison • Maintain contact with your field agency instructor (introductory emails sent) • Site visits (Dr. Vance completed some and I will be setting up others)
