BSN REGISTERED NURSE Tess Myers Period 1 SCHOOLING
BSN REGISTERED NURSE Tess Myers Period 1
SCHOOLING • The traditional BSN program that schools offer is a 4 -year degree. • In these 4 years the student goes through academic classwork, as well as onsite clinical training. • Science classes include anatomy, biology, and chemistry • Other courses then focus on patient care, designing a patient’s treatment plan, and laboratory testing • The student then goes through their clinical rotations. • Prerequisites last approximately 2 years, and clinical care takes up the last 2 years.
BENEFITS OF STARTING WITH YOUR BSN RATHER THAN RN • Starting with your BSN is an ideal place to start if you want to get your masters degree, or if you would like to go on to work as an advanced practice nurse. • With your BSN you will then have to take the required NCLEX-RN licensing exam to then complete your degree and become a nurse.
MONEY • Tuition pursuing a Bachelor of Science Degree in nursing can range anywhere from $40, 000 to $100, 000. The price varies depending on the institution/University you choose to attend. • Coming out of school, the average nurse makes about $75, 510. That salary income can then range up to $106, 000 depending on your demographic location and whether or not you choose to further your education and specialize.
DAILY RESPONSIBILITIES • Primary responsibility is treating and caring for the patients • Recording patients’ symptoms/medical history • Administering medications • Performing diagnostic tests/analyzing results • Another part is educating patients on their treatments and experiences, as well as the family. • Another responsibility is providing emotional support and advice to the patients and family
CHALLENGES • Nurses have 12 -hour shifts, and often find that the night shift is the hardest to do • Many nurses find that there is not enough time for bedside care with the patients. This is quality time spent with their patients, communicating and building a relationship. This time has decreased due to the extensive computer work and paperwork needed to be done on each patient.
INTERVIEW WITH TAYLOR MYERS • Taylor went a different route than most nurses and attended Shady Side School of Nursing. • This is a two-year program through UPMC. • She was apart of the tuition forgiveness program, which meant that she agreed to work for UPMC for 2 years, and in exchange they paid for a portion of her tuition. • The completion of this program leaves you as a Registered Nurse. Taylor then did courses through Ohio University, which gave her BSN and allowed her to get into management and leadership at work.
