BRUKER HTS ARIES PROJECT 1 st year project report / Apr 26 th 2018 GENERAL APPEARANCE OF HTS TAPES WITH 50 mΜ SUBSTRATES • HTS tapes reveal a strong tape curvature (tape bow) due to intrinsic film stresses of the coatings • By bending, 50 µm thick tape exhibits a transient area between transversal to longitudinal curvatures. This leads to a characteristic „knee“ when the free tape is bent e. g. by own weight. Within this knee, curvature does not exceed the critical one: no deterioration of Ic is observed after flattening - bi-stabile mechanics of pre-stressed tape* HTS tape sample *International Journal of solids and Structures 41 (2004) 2801 -2820 Innovation with Integrity All Rights Reserved PAGE 9

BRUKER HTS ARIES PROJECT 1 st year project report / Apr 26 th 2018 SUMMARY • Several HTS tapes based on 12 mm wide and 50 µm thick stainless steel substrates have been processed. One of the tapes was characterized at Bruker HTS and FSU regarding in-field performances in the range of 5 – 31 T • As a result it was measured: Ic 4. 2 K, 5 T=2763 A and Ic 4. 2 K, 18 T=1107 A Je equals to 1020 A/mm 2 at 18 T, B//c, 4. 2 K (champion value) α-value (in i~B-α relationship) = 0. 714 - very favorable value! • In the load free state the 12 mm wide HTS coated conductor sample based on 50µm substrate shows a strong tape bow which makes it difficult to handle during the following processes. Process development activities have been performed to reduce the tape curvature, significantly. • The critical bending radius of the 12 mm wide tape with 50µm substrate was found to be 4. 5 mm Innovation with Integrity All Rights Reserved PAGE 12
