Should he stay with Fatima in the oasis or should he continue onto the pyramids in search of his personal legend? What the alchemist suggests is that Santiago will receive true love from obtaining his personal legend, which Fatima echoes when telling him to go. The concept of a personal legend is the individualistic pursuit of living to reach your dreams and is developed as a major theme in the novel. The theme of centrality of personal legends is developed through the course of the text by the protagonist, Santiago, and instances in the plot.
