BROTHERS LUIS ARMANDO ABRAHAM RODRIGUEZ Hidden Genius: The Quiet Potters of Mata Ortiz: #4 October 8, 2016 by Philip Stover AND
The Young Rodriguez Brothers The Rodriguez brothers, Luis Armando and Abraham are part of a large family with a great pottery tradition. They have remarkable talent, yet typify many potters in that they do not get the exposure or credit their work and character deserve. The purpose of this presentation is to introduce you to these wonderful young men and their work. It is proof that success is found through quiet perseverance and a love for their work
The Young Rodriguez Brothers
Luis Armando Rodriguez Luis is 33 years old. He learned how to pot from his father Armando and his sister Leticia. He began to make pottery to sell when he was 13 or 14 years old. Luis prefers to use traditional Mimbres and Paquimé designs on his pots. He uses white, red, and black clay and mineral paints of the same colors. He is married to potter Claudia Ledezma Loya who also is well known for her white and black pottery with Mimbres and Paquimé designs.

Luis Armando Rodriguez Luis and Claudia have one daughter who is eight years old. She is already beginning to learn to paint ollas. Luis believes that the pottery business has come back a bit from the decline after 9 -11 in the United States. Luis helps his cowboy brother Abraham whenever there is need to work in the family’s agricultural endeavors. His designs has progressed over the years, but he still prefers the simplicity of the traditional designs.

Abraham Rodriguez Abraham Rodriguez is 27 years old. He learned to pot from his father, well-known potter Armando Rodriguez when he was very young. He primarily uses white clay with black and red mineral paint. He loves to paint animals, often hidden in his pots by using negative space to form them. His pots are like treasure hunts; you have to look carefully not to miss any images.
Abraham Rodriguez Abraham is a single young man who is a cowboy at heart and loves to work on the family’s agricultural properties. He loves to paint horses on his pots, something few potters are able to do well. He has an etching technique that he has perfected having used dental pics or sharpened bicycle spokes. He wants to keep up the tradition in a family of more than twenty potters
Abraham Rodriguez He is learning and improving his style on a regular basis (engraved designs using negative space and red, white and black primary colors). Because of that he has increased confidence in his work and has begun entering it into concursos. I recently took a group of visitors around town to visit potters. Of all they saw, they liked Abraham’s work the best and considered it a great value!

The Young Rodriguez Brothers The young Rodriguez brothers represent the hope we have in the future of the village. They are second generation potters determined to carry on the good work for years to come. They demonstrate how those from the same family can develop very different personal styles and designs. There are many hidden potters in the village, both male and female. I encourage our visitors to roam all over, hunting for those wonderful unknown and unheralded treasures.
