Pikes Peak
History • The first man to document Pikes Peak was Zebulon Pike. • Originally called “Pike’s Peak", but was changed to “Pikes Peak” in 1978 due to a law passed by the US Board on Geographic Names. • Edwin James signed on as the relief botanist for the Long Expedition in 1820 after the first botanist had died. • Clark, Gruber & Company began minting gold coins bearing the phrase “Pikes Peak Gold”. • Katharine Lee Bates was moved to write the words to the song "America the Beautiful" in 1893, after having traveled to the top of Pikes Peak on a carriage ride.

Red Rocks Park & Amphitheatre
History • A natural, geologically formed, open-air Amphitheatre set in the Rocky Mountain Foothills, fifteen miles west of Denver. • The allure of the two three hundred foot sandstone monoliths [Ship Rock and Creation Rock ], combined with a naturally occurring theatre set on a mountain stage is not duplicated anywhere in the world. • The dramatic sandstone monoliths are a history book of the life of plants and animals in the area for the past 300 million years.

Aspen Snowmass
History • An expansive winter resort complex located in Pitkin County in western Colorado in the United States. • Owned and operated by the Aspen Skiing Company, it comprises four skiing/snowboarding areas on four adjacent mountains in the vicinity of the towns of Aspen and Snowmass Village. • The four areas collectively form one of the most famous winter resorts in the world and are annually the destination for visitors from all over the world.

History • Bighorn National Recreation Area was established after the Yellowtail dam in October of 1966. • It was the first land that was farmed by early settlers. • The area is about 120, 000 acres.

Theodore Roosevelt National Park

Country- 13 -minute film on the badlands • Roosevelt Cabin- open for self-guided tours from September through May • Evening Campfire Programs- join a ranger at the campfire circle in Cottonwood Campground and Juniper Campground to learn about a different aspect of your National Park • Half Day Hikes- a ranger takes group tours around the parks to explore the different sites

Lewis and Clark Riverboat Expedition
Site History • The Lewis and Clark riverboat is a celebration of the findings of Lewis and Clark on their expedition. • Lewis and Clark’s expedition took place over 200 years ago, and they met many amazing people. • They expedition took place on the Missouri River where they met Sakakawea, the Mandan and Hidatsa. • In the 1870 s, this was the river of Custer and Sitting Bull.
Attractions • Cruises – Singles cruise • this cruise is where people can meet area singles on a 2 hour cruise for only $20 – Wedding Charter • they have to have a notice so that the boat can be properly decorated and there is an additional set-up fee charge of $50 – Prom Cruises • usually stay on the water for 3 hours with fun and music – Business Parties • Business cruises last an hour or close to that time

Grahams Island State Park
Site History • The history of the region is largely a history of the lake. • The first known white settler was Captain Duncan Graham, who arrived shortly after the War of 1812. • Duncan Graham was the Scot trader and trapper, for whom Grahams Island State Park was named. • Immigrants, primarily of Irish and Scot descent, settled the region. • The lake served as a means of transportation for settlers.

The Schedule § Day 1 § We will take a tour at Mount Rushmore that starts at 12: 00. § At 3: 00 we will visit the Presidential Trail beneath the faces. § 8: 00 we will join the Evening Program. § Day 2 § Geology walk at 8: 00 which we will the Ben Reifel Vistor Center. § At 1: 30 were going to the Fossil Talk and learn about the fossils. § At 5: 30 we can go to the Cedar pass Campground Amphitheater.

Mount Rushmore
The History l Getting this project was a challenge all by itself, Robinson had found a sculptor, Gutzon Borglum. l It had to pass Congress and the third time it finally got passed by Governor Gunderson. l It started in 1927 and didn’t finish carving until 14 years later. l The presidents face are Lincoln, Washington, Jefferson, and Roosevelt.
Things to See. . s You can visit the Presidential Trail which is underneath the faces. s There is also different caves and other memorials at the national memorial. s There is a Sturgis motorcycle race. s There is also evening programs.
Mount Rushmore Requirements • For the trails and evening programs its required that you wear light clothes and tennis shoes. • The Presidential Trail is $25 for each person. • There is to be no pets or animals for any of the activities.
Badlands National Park
The History. . /Badlands has been viewed with a mix of dread and fascination. The French called it the bad lands. /The Badlands have supported humans for more than 11, 000 years. /The earliest people to come were ancient mammoth hunters.
Attractions l l Badlands has some of the natural national treasures. It features amazing rock formations and one of the richest fossil beds known to exist. Prairie dog villages Strange but fascinating landscape for adults and kids.
Badland Requirements No pets or animals Comfortable shoes and a lot of water $15 for horseback riding. Its $5 for a 5 day pass for bike riding.
Wind Cave National Park
The History ü Indians have stories about a hole in the cave that blows wind. ü The first person reported to have entered the cave was Charlie Crary in the fall of 1881. He claims to have left his twine to mark his trail, other entering the cave later found his twine.
