How Do Bones Break? • Bones are made up of bone cells, proteins, minerals, and calcium. • Your diet has a huge effect on your bones. • Bones bend under some strain and once the pressure is too sudden or too much, they might snap. • When a bone breaks it is called a fracture.
Description of Fractures • Doctors describe fractures in the following ways: – Complete fracture – Greenstick fracture – Single fracture – Comminuted fracture – Bending fracture – Open fracture
Complete Fracture • Bone is broken into 2 pieces
Greenstick Fracture • Bone cracks on one side only
Single Fracture • Bone is broken in 1 place
Comminuted Fracture • Bone is broken into more than 2 pieces or crushed
Bending Fracture • Bone bends, but doesn’t break (only happens to kids)
Open Fracture • Bone is sticking through skin. • Sometimes called a compound fracture
What Happens When You Break A Bone? • It hurts!!!! • You may feel dizzy, woozy, or chilly from the shock. • You may cry. • Some people do not feel any pain right away because of the shock.
Important Things to Do When a Bone is Broken… • Stay calm, make sure the hurt person is comfortable, tell an adult. • The worst thing you can do is to move it. • If you are not sure what bone is broken or you think the neck of back is broken, do not try to move the injured person until a trained professional has arrived.
What Does the Doctor Do? • Determine the type of fracture. • Use X-rays. • With breaks in larger bones, the doctor may put a pin in it. • After your bone has been set, the next step is casting. – This will keep the bone in place for 1 -3 months.
Casts • Made of bandages soaked in plaster, fiberglass, or plastic. • Come in many different colors and are sometimes waterproof.

What Should You Do When the Cast Comes Off? • Your doctor will give you special exercises. • Eat certain foods that are recommended.
