CURTAINS
PURPOSE OF CURTAINING OR SCREENING HOUSE – Protect chicks from draughts especially during brooding – Retain heat within the house – Prevent rain blowing into the house
NOTE – Surface of the curtain should not be broken – Should be held down tightly – When not in use, neatly rolled to avoid obstruction of ventilation
LIGHTING
LIGHTING – Light should be evenly distributed in the unit – The more the bulbs, the better – Fluorescent light induces eating during cooler parts of the day – A single 100 watt incandescent bulb is required for 1000 birds – However needs to be evenly spread for greater light intensity – Reduce to 40 watts at 4 weeks old
HEAT LAMP
HEAT LAMP – Features special incandescent lamps – Hovers about 18’’ from the chicks to provide warmth for the chicks – Two 250 watt infrared lamps can provide warmth for 500 chicks
Other heating equipment – Jiko – Gas heater
Watering Equipment – Chick fonts – Automatic drinkers – 3 gallon drinker= 1 gallon= 3. 8 litres
CHICK FONT – Plastic of approx. 5 litre capacity – 1 font per 100 chicks maximum
CHICK FONTS – Used by baby chicks – Should not be used beyond 3 weeks since they can easily knock over causing wetness
AUTOMATIC DRINKERS
AUTOMATIC DRINKERS – Widely used in large farms – One is enough for 50 -75 birds

FEEDING EQUIPMENT – Feeding trays – Tube feeders – Automatic feeders
FEEDING TRAYS – Plastic and 15 inch diameter – 1 per 100 chicks maximum
