BRITISH CREMATION AUTHORITIES CODE OF CREMATION PRACTICE 2005
1. CONDUCT • Crematorium officials must work together to create and maintain atmosphere of reverence and respect.
2. STAFF • Care should be taken to appoint staff who will maintain atmosphere of reverence • Preference to be given to certified applicants
3. AFTER COMMITTAL • Body shall not be removed from Crematorium after Committal except for lawful purpose • As long as Authority to Cremate received, coffin shall be put in cremator exactly as received on catafalque • Once in cremator, coffin shall not be touched until process of cremation completed, when Cremated Remains shall be collected and disposed of according to instructions received.
4. CORRECT IDENTY • a) No coffin shall be accepted at a crematorium, unless it bears adequate particulars of identity of deceased therein. • b) Every care to be taken to ensure correct identification throughout whole proceedings from receipt of coffin on catafalque to final disposal of Cremated Remains
5. SEPARATELY CREMATED • Each coffin given into care of Cremation Authority shall be cremated separately
6. COFFIN COVERS • When a re-usable cover is used to encase a coffin, signed authority must be given by the Applicant for the cremation authorising its use and consenting to removal from crematorium
7. METAL RESIDUES • Any metal found amongst the Cremated Remains shall not be salvaged for any purpose but shall be disposed of in aggregate in accordance with the directions of the Cremation Authority or Higher Authority.
8. CREMATED REMAINS Utmost care shall be taken that remains shall be: • Kept separate • Suitably identified • Placed in a separate container awaiting final disposal • If to be disposed of in GOR, must be conducted with reverence and respect. • If to be conveyed by carrier, should be packaged according to recommendations of Federation of British Cremation Authorities
9. CREMATORS AND ANCILLARY EQUIPMENT Cremators and all other ancillary apparatus used in the Crematorium, shall be kept in good repair and maintained in accordance with: • Manufacturer’s recommendations • Guidance Notes issued under Environmental Protection Act 1990 or subsequent legislation
10. STATUTORY REGULATIONS • All cremations shall be carried out according to the provisions of the Cremation Acts and Regulation made thereunder, and any subsequent legislation
