“Pupils are currently making outstanding progress and achieving standards generally that are well above average. ” Our school Ofsted, 2008 Britannia Community Primary School is in the heart of Lancashire’s Rossendale Valley. The semi-rural school is situated one mile south of Bacup, an old mill town close to the Yorkshire border. The school is “outstanding” according to Ofsted’s latest inspection. There are 204 children on the roll, evenly spread over the seven class years, with single form entry. In recent years, the school has experienced extremely high numbers of applications for the Reception Class intake, and 2011 is anticipated to continue the trend. Britannia School has a strong management team in place which pro-actively lead the school to achieve high standards throughout. This team is supported by a stable, long-serving teaching staff who provide children with a learning environment that is both challenging and supportive, helping each child achieve their full potential. The children come from a broad spectrum of advantaged and disadvantaged backgrounds, and attendance is above average. There is a wide variety of extra curricular activities, particularly in sports. These are lead by volunteer teachers and community groups, such as Bury Football Club and Rossendale Karate Club. The school has an active PTFA which is well supported by parents and teachers. The association organises several fundraising events throughout the year from an annual Easter Bingo to Fairs and Raffles, and in 2011 will help fund an outdoor classroom and trim trail.
The setting Britannia School was opened in 1928 as an infant and junior school for the Britannia area of Bacup. The school is set in three acres of land mainly grassed playing fields, with the recent addition of Key Stage 1 play area and Key Stage 2 activity tyres. The rural environment of the school is an exciting and stimulating setting, for both teachers and children. The grounds are used by the children for exploring and experimenting, and the Reception Class children have recently planted a flower garden. There is significant opportunity to further develop the outdoor space to provide more learning and leisure opportunities for the children. Rossendale Valley Britannia Community Primary School is located one mile south of the mill town of Bacup, where a large proportion of its pupils live. This part of Rossendale has a population of around 13, 000 and is located in the South Pennines on the River Irwell. There is a mix of social backgrounds in the area from wealthy, professional families to pockets of deprivation. walks, and mountain biking and road cycling trails available all over the Valley. The area is also home to the popular Irwell Sculpture Trail and two Panopticons with The Halo in Haslingden and at The Singing Ringing Tree at Crown Point. The area has a strong sporting foundation with cricket teams from Bacup, Haslingden and Rawtenstall competing at County level.
