Brief Review of

Types of Graphs • Graphs are pictures that help us understand or interpret data. Different types of graphs can be used to display different types of information. • There are three common types of graphs: – Line graphs – Pie Charts – Bar Graphs • Later, we will also talk about another type of graph called a scatter plot.

Line Graphs • A line graph is a way to summarize how two pieces of information are related and how they vary depending on one another. • Line graphs consist of an X and Y axis.

Pie Charts • A pie chart is a circle graph divided into pieces; each displaying the size of some related piece of information. • Pie charts are used to display the sizes of parts that make up some whole.

Bar Graphs • Bar graphs consist of an X and Y axis and a series of labeled bars that show different values. • The bars can be vertical or horizontal.

Tips for Making Graphs • Always label each scale. Whenever numbers are used, you MUST indicate what those numbers represent (Examples: inches, meters, seconds, people, acres, liters, etc. ) • You should always include a legend with your graph – A legend is 1 -2 sentences (written below the graph) that make a conclusion about the data shown on your graph.

Information to include on any graph you make for this class: Your name Class Period Label your Y-axis (units) A Title for your Graph (plot your datause different colors when needed) Label your X-axis (units) Legend (1 -2 sentences that draw a conclusion about the data on your graph)
