Bridging the Gap from Military Service to Civilian
Bridging the Gap from Military Service to Civilian Life The resources you need in order to help service members make a successful transition
Why is becoming a civilian so hard?
Military Culture is regimented
The civilian workplace is very different
The reality!
They Don’t Always Get It Perhaps they: • • Didn’t make it to the transition class Couldn’t understand everything that was presented Overwhelmed by the sheer volume of information People they meet in the civilian sector don’t understand what they have been through
Some Vets Are Struggling • Unemployment 7 -10% higher than general population • About 1/3 are not completing their higher ed. programs • Comprise 23% of homeless • 20 -25% of suicides in US • 20% of young Vets believed to have TBI or PTSD.
Homelessness is a problem The VA wants to help “You Fought for Our Home. We'll Fight for Yours” If a Veteran needs housing assistance, call the National Call Center for Homeless Veterans at 1 -877 -4 AID-VET (424 -3838). When you call: • You will be connected to a trained VA responder. • The responder will ask a few questions to assess the needs. • If you’re a Veteran, you may be connected with the Homeless Program point of contact at the nearest VA facility. • Contact information will be requested so staff may follow up.
