Bridges to Understanding: Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, Race, and Social Justice Saturday, July 11, 2020 Summer Leadership Session Lead by Sigrid Solomon
Greetings & Introduction • My lens • • African American Female Middle age Educated Upper Middle class Christian Abled Heterosexual
Objective How will our Club be able to answer the call to action as it relates to practicing the values, we espouse about diversity, inclusion, human dignity, and leadership. As transformational leaders in one of the greatest civic organizations in the world, we have an opportunity to live out the four-way test by encouraging reconciliation and understanding in a spirit of working together to find solutions to these larger societal problems.
Expectations • Our time together will be an opportunity to unlock the doors to our hearts and Clubs to have a transparent conversation and establish actions steps to move forward regarding Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. We have a responsibility to ensure we stand with all of those seeking justice, all who value diversity and inclusion, all those who have been cast aside by society because their skin color, sexual orientation, gender identity, ethnic origins, religious practices, and economic security is not what may be considered by some to be normative. • Fellow Rotarians, are you willing to close the door of oppression and open the door of reconciliation to think critically and act collaboratively?
Guidelines for Engagement • Vegas Rules- stories shared are to be kept private • Respect Everyone- No personal attacks • Reserve Judgement • Listen to understand, not to respond • Let others complete their thoughts before responding • Allow for and ask questions • Let people know if something offends you using “I” and “me” statements • Crawl, walk, run

Diversity Iceberg
Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Statement • A top priority for Rotary is growing and diversifying our membership to make sure we reflect the communities we serve and are inclusive of all cultures, experiences, and identities. • We're creating an organization that is more open and inclusive, fair to all, builds goodwill, and benefits our communities.
Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Statement • To help us achieve our goal, the RI Board of Directors passed a diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) statement: v. As a global network that strives to build a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change, Rotary values diversity and celebrates the contributions of people of all backgrounds, regardless of their age, ethnicity, race, color, abilities, religion, socioeconomic status, culture, sexual orientation, and gender identity. v. Rotary will cultivate a diverse, equitable, and inclusive culture in which people from underrepresented groups have greater opportunities to participate as members and leaders. • Making diversity, equity, and inclusion a priority is everyone's responsibility — from Rotary members to staff at the Secretariat.

Opportunities: How do we open the door?
Acrostics
Inspiration to Embrace Opportunities As James Baldwin mentions in his book The Fire Next Time, “I think that people can be better than that, and I know that people can be better than they are. We are capable of bearing a great burden, once we discover that the burden is reality and arrive where reality is…reality- the fact that life is tragic. ” Fellow Rotarians, we are better than where fear, intimidation, racism, sexism, discrimination, misogyny and hate demand hateful action towards those that are not like us. Another quote from James Baldwin from the same text, “In short, we, the black and the white, deeply need each other here if we are really to become a nation-if we are really, that is, to achieve our identity, our maturity, as men and women. To create one nation has proved to be a hideously difficult task; there is certainly no need now to create two, one black and one white. ” • Fellow Rotarians, what kind of nation should we build together today and for the future?
