What are some different types of bridges? Beam Arch Truss Suspension
Beam Oldest bridge design Used for short spans No intermediate supports are required Its basic design is used on the modern overpasses Can be as simple as a log used to cross a creek
Truss Similar to a beam bridge but are capable of supporting heavier loads Trusses can be placed below the deck or above the deck Has triangles that are placed together to make trusses Extremely cost effective
Arch Created by the Romans A curved arch support that distributes the load of the bridge to the supports at either end A single arch is used for short spans and are typically made of stone Multiple arches are used for long spans and are typically made of steel
Suspension Most complex and costly bridge Most effective bridge for long span distances Deck is suspended and completely supported by metal cables Cables are hung from tall towers that rise above the deck and are fastened to the end of the bridge at either side
A few forces applied to bridges Tension compression Torsion
Tension A pulling force Compression A pushing force
Torsion Twisting force
