BRIDGE FROM GUL TO IUL TRAINING SERIES: GUL & IUL 50/50 combination Diversity for best of both worlds Policies issued by American General Life Insurance Company ("AGL“), Houston, TX, and The United States Life Insurance Company in the City of New York (US Life), members of American International Group, Inc. (AIG). FOR FINANCIAL PROFESSIONAL USE ONLY – NOT FOR PUBLIC DISTRIBUTION.
Background. If your client is considering a guaranteed universal life (GUL) policy, you may also consider what their premium dollars can buy when you combine GUL with a protection-focused index universal life (IUL). In many cases, they can receive strong guarantees plus cash value growth potential – the best of both worlds. GUL offers many benefits, including strong guarantees. However, it does have some limitations: • Limited liquidity or flexibility • Limited (if any) cash accumulation • Designed primarily for death benefits. FOR FINANCIAL PROFESSIONAL USE ONLY – NOT FOR PUBLIC DISTRIBUTION.
GUL vs. protection-focused IUL. A combination of a strong guaranteed death benefit like a traditional GUL product WITH the potential of meaningful cash accumulation in a protection-focused IUL can be a great option. Many families know they need life insurance, but also know they need more money saved for retirement. Which one is better for your client? Maybe the answer is some of both! Combination GUL & IUL • Strong guarantees similar to GUL • More cash value than GUL • Flexibility to access your cash value FOR FINANCIAL PROFESSIONAL USE ONLY – NOT FOR PUBLIC DISTRIBUTION.
Scenario. Meet Jason. He’s 50 years old, married with two kids and needs $500 k additional permanent life insurance coverage. • Likes the security of a GUL policy, but not the limited cash value. • Likes the growth opportunity within an IUL, but is still concerned about guarantees. As with any financial strategy, diversification may provide a combination of potential benefits that any single product cannot. Let’s compare a GUL solution with one that combined two policies: One GUL and one protection-focused IUL. GUL and IUL solutions: Jason’s financial professional shows him two options for the same monthly premium of $606 with a guarantee age of 105. • Solution 1 offers GUL only. • Solution 2 offers GUL and IUL. This is not an actual case. This hypothetical example is for illustrative purposes only. FOR FINANCIAL PROFESSIONAL USE ONLY – NOT FOR PUBLIC DISTRIBUTION.
Solution 1: $500 k guaranteed UL. Guaranteed UL: Secure Lifetime GUL 3 A monthly premium of $606 Guaranteed insurance coverage until age 105 • Cash value of $7, 521 in year 20 • Death benefit of $500 k at age 105 • Death benefit of $0 at age 121 Return of Premium option If needs change, Jason could also receive some or all of his paid premiums back at year 20 or 25. 1 1 50% in year 20, 100% in year 25, capped at 40% of the policy’s lowest specified amount. This is not an actual case. This hypothetical example is for illustrative purposes only. FOR FINANCIAL PROFESSIONAL USE ONLY – NOT FOR PUBLIC DISTRIBUTION.
Solution 2: $500 k GUL & IUL combo. GUL & protection-focused IUL: Secure Lifetime GUL 3 & Value+ Protector II A monthly premium of $606 Jason prefers to be more conservative, so a 5% illustrated rate on the IUL provides all of these great benefits: • Guaranteed insurance coverage for $250 k of GUL until age 105, and for $250 k of IUL until age 93. • Cash value of $83, 976 in year 20, combined • Death benefit of $1. 04 M at age 105, combined • Death benefit of $1. 9 M in IUL at age 121 This is not an actual case. This hypothetical example is for illustrative purposes only. FOR FINANCIAL PROFESSIONAL USE ONLY – NOT FOR PUBLIC DISTRIBUTION.
Compare the solutions. Looking at the two solutions side-byside: The single-product GUL-only solution provides the absolute best in guarantees. However, the DIVERSIFIED 50/50 combination may offer valuable longterm cash value, death benefit and guarantees that Jason may find more suitable for his needs. Summary Jason wanted the most out of his insurance program. For $606 per month, his financial advisor provided him with two options. Which do you think he chose? All policies in this example were illustrated for a 50 -year-old male, preferred non-tobacco on 05/15/21. The Secure Lifetime GUL 3 policies were illustrated as paying and guaranteed to age 105. The Value+ Protector II IUL was illustrated at a 5% index crediting rate. Both solutions were illustrated using a monthly premium of $606. The cash value and death benefit amounts may have been rounded for ease of explanation. This is not an actual case. This hypothetical example is for illustrative purposes only. FOR FINANCIAL PROFESSIONAL USE ONLY – NOT FOR PUBLIC DISTRIBUTION.
