Brian Gilmore University of Edinburgh A View from
Brian Gilmore University of Edinburgh A View from the Campus 9/9/2020 Serenate 1
Context • In UK terms, Edinburgh is a large University with circa 20, 000 students • Edinburgh is a heavily research active University 9/9/2020 Serenate 2
Current Position • Super. JANET backbone is 2. 5 G and 10 G • Access speed from Super. JANET is 2 x 1 G. (1 G for e-science – unusual!) • Interior Campus links are mainly 1 G • System connections are 10/100 but could be 1 G 9/9/2020 Serenate 3
Current Service and Usage • Current service is pure IP • No Qo. S, no dedicated bandwidth • Usage currently peaks at about 50 meg 9/9/2020 Serenate 4
Financing • University funds the capital for the backbone • Schools fund the capital for their networks • Thus upgrades to 1 G would be paid for by the School • The recurrent funding for the network is charged to Schools 9/9/2020 Serenate 5
MANs • The Super. JANET (SJ) user base is approx 750 institutions with about 5, 000 users • Most institutions are connected via their local Metropolitan Area Network (MAN) to SJ • These MANs are a separate management domain with policies etc 9/9/2020 Serenate 6
Stakeholders for the Future • If a new ‘service’ is to be introduced, such as: • Qo. S • Bandwidth on Demand • Large Bandwidth Demands • Then the following need to be consulted and to agree! 9/9/2020 Serenate 7
Management Domains User School (Dept) University Network Provider (Computing Services) MAN Provider UKERNA 9/9/2020 Serenate 8
Obstacles • The ‘easiest’ levels to address are probably the UKERNA and Computing Services levels • Though the problems of small institutions with limited resources can not be overlooked 9/9/2020 Serenate 9
Obstacles - Continued • The School and MAN levels can offer significant financial and policy level problems • For example, the existence of School level Firewalls is currently a major obstacle to the working of GRID Virtual Organisations and even escience working in a single Institution! 9/9/2020 Serenate 10
Summary • The ‘last mile’ is still a problem even in campus based networking • Investment at ‘the top’ needs to be matched with investment ‘down below’ 9/9/2020 Serenate 11
