Grolier Side, 2005

His process of working begins with an existing book, which has its edges sealed, creating an enclosed vessel full of potential. The surface of the book begins to be dissected from the front. Dettmer works with knives, nippers and surgical tools to carve a page at a time, exposing each layer while cutting. Nothing from inside the books is relocated or inserted, just carried away. Images or ideas are disclosed to display alternate stories and memories. His work is a collaboration with the existing material and its past creators and the finished pieces expose a new relationship of internal elements of the book since its original conception. Dettmer Books-Sculptures seek to revive a new book shape provoking a new sensory and cognitive experiences from the words and images contents. Dettmer’s works have been exhibited internationally in numerous solo and group exhibitions in galleries, museums and Art Centers. His work can be found in public and private collections in the United States, Latin America, Europe, Australia and Asia. Britannica Tower, 2012
